Forward planning
The 68-year-old said: "I've told the [Spanish Football] Federation that they should be looking for a replacement for after the European championship," he said. "It's sensible that they should look for a new direction after [UEFA] EURO 2008™." The veteran coach, who took over from Iñaki Sáez after UEFA EURO 2004™, said he would resign if Spain failed to reach the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup but later reneged on that decision. Spain are third in Group F having lost qualifying games away against Northern Ireland and Sweden.
