Home is where Janas' heart is

Poland coach Pawel Janas will largely rely on home-based players for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers.

Poland coach Pawel Janas has called up only eight foreign-based players for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers with Hungary and San Marino.

Wins required
Janas said that goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek of Liverpool FC and FC Porto forward Emmanuel Olisadebe will be his key players for the two games, which his side must win to reinvigorate their qualification bid.

Injury problems
With injury worries in central midfield, Janas has recalled 26-year-old Miroslaw Szymkowiak of Wisla Kraków, who won the last of his three caps in Novemeber 1998. 30-year-old GKS Katowice goalkeeper Jaroslaw Tkoc, who has never played for the national side, is also included.

Zajac wins recall
KS Groclin Grodzisk Wielkopolski forward Marcin Zajac, who made his fourth and last appearance for Poland more than three years ago, is another recalled, while Janas has also called up Wisla strikers Maciej Zurawski and Marcin Kuzba.

Injury worries
Janas said injuries to key players had disrupted his plans. "I admit my idea of play collapsed because of injuries. I hope we avoid it in forthcoming days," he said. Wisla's Arkadiusz Glowacki is ruled out through injury and club team-mate Marcin Baszczynski is doubtful, leaving Janas with a shortage of central defenders. Jacek Bak and Radoslaw Kazluzny have been selected for that postion.

Poor start
Poland's qualifying campaign began with a 2-0 win in San Marino, but the team then slipped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Latvia to leave them third in Group 4 with three points from their two games so far.

Poland squad
