Anastasiadis to stick with Cyprus

Angelos Anastasiadis has renewed his contract as Cyprus coach for another two years after his side earned 14 points in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying.

The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has announced that Greek coach Angelos Anastasiadis has renewed his contract as national team manager for another two years.

Agreement reached
Anastasiadis, who took charge towards the end of 2004, has already established himself as the most successful manager in the island's history after leading them to their best ever run in a qualifying campaign, finishing the UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers with 14 points. An official statement read: "A contract renewal agreement was today reached with Angelos Anastasiades and his two assistants Leonidas Demetrakopoulos and Apostolos Terzis with regards to the 2010 [FIFA] World Qualifiers."

Bigger successes
Convincing wins at home against the Republic of Ireland and Wales as well as impressive 1-1 draws against Germany at home and Ireland in Dublin were the highlights of Cyprus' UEFA EURO 2008™ campaign, but Anastasiadis is eager for bigger successes, targeting a first finals tournament appearance. Sunday's World Cup qualifying draw saw Cyprus paired with Italy, Bulgaria, the Republic of Ireland once again, Georgia and Montenegro in Group 8.
