Spain friendly called off

The Spanish Football Federation has announced the friendly with Mexico on 20 August has been postponed.

Spain have postponed a friendly against Mexico scheduled for the New York Giants stadium in New Jersey on 20 August.

Combination of factors
It is believed a combination of factors – including a wish to avoid unneccessary fatigue given that many members of the Spanish squad have been on long-distance pre-season tours with their clubs, and the failure to agree a deal to televise the match – led to the decision.

Training camp
Real Madrid CF do not return from a three-week Asian tour until next week, while FC Barcelona have travelled to the United States and Britain as part of their pre-season preparation. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said that the game would be replaced by a three-day training camp for squad players.

All to play for
Spain currently lie in second place in UEFA EURO 2004™ Group 6, a point behind Greece with two matches left to play, and face a crucial match against Ukraine on 10 September.
