North District Amateur team guide

The Dutch representatives have youth on their side in the UEFA Regions' Cup finals.

Country: Netherlands

How they reached the finals:
The Netherlands' North District Amateur - District Noord Is their Dutch name - took full advantage of playing on home territory to win Group 7. Wins in all three of their games saw District Noord win a place at the UEFA Regions' Cup finals, but they were made to work hard by opponents from Malta, Northern Ireland and Portugal in their qualifying group.

Early goal
Gerard Molenaars' side started their campaign on 16 October 2002 with a game against Malta Amateur, and though they led through Age Boersma's 12th-minute goal, the Maltese side proved to be fierce opponents. It took until the 79th minute for Hendrik Jan Smit to double the Dutch side's advantage, but Malta struck back three minutes from time through Larry Lagana to set up a tense finale. However, the hosts held on for a 2-1 win.

Boersma on target
Boersma scored his second goal of the tournament within two minutes of kick off against Northern Ireland Amateur in District Noord's second game, and a goal in first-half added time from Johnny De Jonge sealed a 2-0 win in Emmen.

Decisive game
The decisive game was to be District Noord's last in the group against unbeaten Algarve Amateur at the Sportpark Hoogeveen on 19 October. The scores were level at half-time and after Valerio Jose Narciso Rosa opened the scoring for the Portuguese side ten minutes into the second period, all seemed lost for Molenaars' men.

Late penalty
However, Boersma came to the rescue, scoring his third goal of the tournament with 71 minutes gone to leave the two sides level on points in the group. In the seventh minute of added time, District Noord got the breakthrough, with Jermaine Kasto converting from the penalty spot to give the Dutch side the decisive victory.

Young team
As the finals approach, District Noord will be hoping that the impressive Boersma can maintain his record of scoring a goal in every game in qualifying. One of the youngest sides in the tournament, the 21-year-old striker will carry Dutch hopes on his shoulders.
