A village with a population of around 3,000, Fao is part of the Esposende municipality, and is located next to the River Cavado and not far from the Atlantic coast. The famous Ofir beach lies nearby and is a noted summer hotspot, but almost as celebrated is one of the most important medieval cemeteries in the Iberian peninsula, the Barreiras, which boasts around 200 graves dating back to the 11th century.
Football in Fao
Clube Futebol de Fão play in the fourth tier of the Portuguese league system, but boast a fine 5,000-capacity arena, the Estádio de Fão. Formally inaugurated on 11 October 2007 by the mayor of the Esposende region, João Cepa, its first game was a friendly between the local side and Minho neighbours Gil Vicente FC – whose Estádio Cidade de Barcelos will host the UEFA Regions' Cup final. The match ended 1-1.
