The Romans renamed this Celtic settlement Bracara Augusta more than 2,000 years ago, with the modern Braga now the fast-growing focal point of the Minho region. The cathedral and the shrines of Sameiro and Bom Jesus are marks of the city's heritage, but since the foundation of the Minho University in 1973, Braga has been famous for its youthful population; it was declared European Youth Capital for 2012.
Football in Braga
SC Braga's footballing stock has risen vertiginously since Domingos Paciência followed up a best-ever second-placed Liga finish in 2009/10 with a trip to this season's UEFA Europa League final. Portuguese Cup winners in 1966, the Arsenalistas were founded in 1915 and played their home games at the 30,000-capacity Estádio 1º Maio (named in honour of International Worker's Day) from its inception in 1950 until they relocated to the Estádio Municipal in 2003.
