Located on the right bank of the Homem River, the village of Vila Verde is about 11km away from Braga and boasts a population of almost 4,000. While it is mentioned as long ago as the tenth century, the modern village was founded in 1855 and is a noted centre for winemaking and handicrafts, particularly the embroidered 'lenço de namorado' handkerchief, made by local women as a gift to potential suitors.

Football in Vila Verde
Founded in 1943, SC Vila Verde ceased to participate in senior tournaments in 1984 due to financial problems, but since 1992 has been a satellite youth club for Sporting Clube de Portugal. The club's futsal side are pretty handy too, reaching the final of the Portuguese Futsal Cup in 1999. With a capacity of 3,000, the Estádio Municipal de Vila Verde was inaugurated by the President of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, on 2 June 2007.
