Two penalties converted by Keleti Régió captain Imre Domokos gave the Hungarian side a winning start in UEFA Regions' Cup Group A with Qarachala twice denied by the impressive Szilveszter Tóth.
The Hungarian side looked calm and composed even before kick-off, and they dealt similarly well with the temperature on the pitch as two moments of indiscipline cost the Azerbaijani contenders. Domokos finished from the spot on 39 minutes after Seid Isgandarov – on as an early substitute for Faraj Farzaliyev – fouled László Lakatos in the box. The captain dusted himself off to rattle in a second just before the break after he was impeded by Ramiz Chovdarov.
The result was fair on the balance of play, but Qarachala can take some consolation from having had two fine chances from open play. In the first half, Isa Atayev had an effort on target from close range, and substitute Rafik Kochaliyev had a similar opportunity in the second half, but on both occasions Tóth came to Keleti Régió’s rescue.
Veneto are next up for Qarachala, while Keleti Régió take on Eastern Region, who are looking for a lifeline following a 4-1 loss to the hosts in Abano Terme.
