Former FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio passes away

The former president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Carlo Tavecchio, has died at the age of 79.

Mr Tavecchio was elected as FIGC president in 2014 and served at the helm of Italian football for the following three years.

Born in Ponte Lambro in the northern Italian province of Como, he served as mayor of his home town for 20 years and was the founder of the local Pontelambrese football club during a long career in the game.

He was a council member of the Lombardy Regional Committee (1987– 92) before becoming head of the committee from 1996. Mr Tavecchio was vice-president of the National Amateur League from 1992 to 1996 and went on to hold the presidency of this body for 15 years (May 1999 – August 2014).

Mr Tavecchio was a member of the UEFA Youth and Amateur Football Committee from 2002 to 2014.
