• The son of youth coach Bohdan Markevich, Myron started as a midfielder with Karpaty. After two seasons he went on to represent SKA Lviv and Spartak Ordzhnikidze before finishing as player-coach at Torpedo Lutsk.

• Only 28 when he hung up his boots, he made a notable impact in three coaching spells back at Karpaty, reaching the 1993 and 1999 Ukrainian Cup finals and coming third in the Premier League in 1997/98.

• Briefly a coach in Russia with Anzhi in 2002, Markevich hit a new high at Metalist following his appointment in summer 2005. He led the club to three successive third-placed finishes in the league from 2006/07, the best results in their history.

• Markevich took that success into Europe in 2008/09 as his side progressed to the UEFA Cup round of 16 after winning their group, eventually losing on away goals to FC Dynamo Kyiv.

• A keen student of coaching – he has made trips to study Fabio Capello, Christoph Daum and Carlo Ancelotti  – as well as an able pianist, Markevich was named Ukraine coach on his 59th birthday, but stepped down in August 2010 to focus on Metalist. He led the side to runners-up in 2012/13 before stepping down with them second again the following winter.
