Juventus' unbeaten record a warning for Bayern

Juventus have won all five European quarter-finals against German sides so FC Bayern München will be on their guard as two UEFA Champions League heavyweights meet in Munich.

FC Bayern München's quest for a second successive UEFA Champions League semi-final place – and third in four years – is threatened by a Juventus side who have won all five European quarter-finals against German opponents and are unbeaten in 18 games in UEFA club competition, qualifying included.

Previous meetings
• All the previous six contests between the European heavyweights have come in the UEFA Champions League group stage, and all since October 2004. Juventus have recorded three victories to Bayern's two.

• They last met in Germany in 2009/10, the game ending goalless. Bayern then won 4-1 in Turin on matchday six, with Mario Gomez and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk both on target, to snatch second place in Group A and send their opponents into the UEFA Europa League.

• The lineups for the game in Munich on 30 September 2009 were:
Bayern: Butt, Braafheid, Van Buyten, Ottl, Lahm, Badstuber, Müller, Schweinsteiger, Ribéry, Robben (Olić 45), Klose (Gomez 74).
Juventus: Buffon, Chiellini, Felipe Melo, Grosso, Marchisio, Camoranesi (Tiago 90), Grygera, Diego (Poulsen 60), Legrottaglie, Iaquinta, Trezeguet (Amauri 74).

• The teams also locked horns in Munich in 2004/05, when Juventus came away with a 1-0 win thanks to Alessandro Del Piero's 90th-minute goal. The next season, Bayern won 2-1 at home. In each of those two campaigns Juve triumphed in Turin, 1-0 in October 2004, and 2-1 13 months later.

Match background
• Bayern reached their fourth UEFA Champions League quarter-final in five seasons with an away goals win against Arsenal FC in the round of 16. After a 3-1 win in London they went down 2-0 at home, only their second reverse at the Fußball Arena München in 19 European ties, excluding last season's UEFA Champions League final, which they lost on penalties to Chelsea FC.

• Bayern had won 17 of their previous 18 home European games, the sole exception a 3-2 loss to FC Internazionale Milano in the 2010/11 round of 16. They won all three home games in finishing top of Group F, overcoming Valencia CF 2-1, LOSC Lille 6-1 and FC BATE Borisov 4-1.

• Bayern faced Italian opposition on their way to last year's final. In the group stage they beat SSC Napoli 3-2 at home on matchday four thanks to a Mario Gomez hat-trick in a game in which Holger Badstuber was sent off.

• In Naples, Badstuber's own goal had wiped out Toni Kroos' early goal with Gomez having a penalty saved.

• Including their 2010 UEFA Champions League final reverse against Inter this is Bayern's 14th meeting with Italian opposition in five seasons. The Bavarian club have won four and drawn one of their last six home games against Italian teams, with their full home record showing W7 D5 L5. Overall their record is W12 D8 L15.

• Juventus are in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the eighth time. They were last at this stage in 2005/06, when they lost 2-0 away and on aggregate to Arsenal FC. They have not reached the last four since 2002/03, when they beat FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals after following a 1-1 home draw with a 2-1 away win.

• The Bianconeri's Group E campaign brought draws at Chelsea (2-2) and FC Nordsjælland (1-1), the 1-0 matchday six win at FC Shakhtar Donetsk ensuring they finished top of the section. In the round of 16 they won 3-0 at Celtic FC and 2-0 at home to extend their unbeaten run in UEFA competition to 18 fixtures.

• Juve have not been beaten on their travels in Europe since 18 March 2010 when they went down 4-1 at Fulham FC in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg, losing 5-4 on aggregate. Their subsequent nine away fixtures have produced four wins and five draws.

• Juventus have won all five European quarter-finals against German opponents and their last eight two-legged ties against teams from the country. They have played 14 such contests, losing just two.

• The Italian side did lose the 1997 UEFA Champions League final in Munich against Borussia Dortmund 3-1 but won by the same score against the same opponents in Dortmund in the two-legged UEFA Cup final in 1993, completing their triumph with a 3-0 home win. They lost 1-0 to Hamburger SV in the 1983 European Champion Clubs' Cup final in Athens. The Turin club's record in Germany is W8 D5 L7.

• Antonio Conte scored in the second legs of Juve's 1994/95 UEFA Cup quarter-final tie at home to Eintracht Frankfurt (3-0, 4-1 on agg) and in the semi at Dortmund (2-1 win, 4-3 on agg). He struck again at Dortmund five months later in the Bianconeri's 3-1 win in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Team ties
• Jupp Heynckes was Real Madrid CF coach when they defeated Juventus 1-0 in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League final. Conte was a second-half substitute for the Bianconeri.

• Andrea Barzagli played for VfL Wolfsburg between 2008 and January 2011, winning the Bundesliga title in 2008/09. In five games against Bayern he was only once on the winning side. Between July 2010 and January 2011, Andrea Barzagli and Mario Mandžukic were team-mates at Wolfsburg.

• Arturo Vidal started his career in Europe with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he played between 2007 and 2011 before joining Juventus. Despite scoring twice, he never managed a league win against Bayern in eight attempts. On 4 March 2009 Leverkusen overcame Bayern 4-2 in the German Cup quarter-finals, Vidal scoring the second goal.

• Between 2009 and 2011 Vidal was coached by Heynckes at Leverkusen. He also played with Kroos for an 18-month period from January 2009.

• Rafinha played in Serie A with Genoa CFC during 2010/11.

• Andrea Pirlo and Mandžukić both scored in the 1-1 draw between Italy and Croatia in Poznan in the UEFA EURO 2012 group stage. Gianluigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Claudio Marchisio and Emanuele Giaccherini also started for Italy while Sebastian Giovinco was a second-half substitute.

• Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Marchisio and Pirlo all played as Italy beat Germany 2-1 in the UEFA EURO 2012 semi-final in Warsaw. Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Badstuber, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Gomez and substitute Thomas Müller all featured for Germany.

• Buffon and Pirlo played in Italy's 2-0 extra-time win against Germany in the 2006 FIFA World Cup semi-final in Dortmund. The host nation fielded Lahm while Schweinsteiger was a second-half substitute.

• Buffon and Pirlo also started the final of that competition against Franck Ribéry's France in Berlin, Pirlo scoring a penalty in Italy's shoot-out victory.

• In the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League first group stage Claudio Pizarro scored Bayern's goal in a 2-1 home defeat by Pirlo's Milan.

• In the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, Pirlo put Milan ahead against Bayern for whom Daniel Van Buyten scored twice to earn a 2-2 draw. Pirlo and Milan went on to triumph 4-2 on aggregate.

• Nicolas Anelka and Pizarro were team-mates at Chelsea FC in 2008. Anelka and Ribéry have played together for France.

• Xherdan Shaqiri and Stephan Lichtsteiner are international team-mates with Switzerland.
