For the third year in four, FC Bayern München and Manchester City FC meet in the UEFA Champions League group stage – starting in Munich on matchday one.

Previous meetings
• City came from two goals down to end Bayern's record ten-game run of UEFA Champions League wins on matchday six last term. It meant the teams finished level on points with Bayern top thanks to their preceding 3-1 win at City.

• The lineups for that Munich encounter on 10 December 2013 were:
Bayern: Neuer, Lahm, Dante, Boateng, Alaba, Thiago, Kroos, Ribéry, Müller, Götze (Martínez 55), Mandžukić (Shaqiri 68).
Man City: Hart, Richards (Zabaleta 16), Kolarov, Lescott, Demichelis, Fernandinho, García, Milner, Silva (Negredo 73), Navas, Džeko (Rodwell 88).

• City faced Bayern in the group stage of their debut UEFA Champions League campaign in 2011/12, losing 2-0 in Munich but winning 2-0 at home. Bayern won the group, with City third.

• The German title holders made a third consecutive UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance last term, losing to Real Madrid CF.

• Bayern eliminated Arsenal (2-0a, 1-1h) in the last 16 and City's neighbours Manchester United FC (1-1a, 3-1h) in the quarter-finals. The second-leg win over United was the first victory in Bayern's last five matches with English opposition in Bavaria – including the 2012 final defeat against Frank Lampard's Chelsea FC.

• Bayern's overall home record against English teams is W11 D6 L3.

City
• The Premier League winners reached the UEFA Champions League knockout stage for the first time in 2013/14, losing to FC Barcelona in the last 16.

• They won all three away matches in the group stage, at FC Viktoria Plzeň (3-0), PFC CSKA Moskva (2-1) and Bayern (3-2).

• Their overall record away to Bundesliga opposition is W2 D0 L5.

• Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany are the only survivors of City's first win in Germany – 2-0 at an FC Schalke 04 side including Manuel Neuer – in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage.

• Pep Guardiola and Manuel Pellegrini met as coaches of Barcelona and Real Madrid CF in 2009/10, Barça winning both matches (1-0h, 0-2a) as they beat Madrid to the title by three points.

• With Villarreal in 2008/09, Pellegrini suffered a 2-1 home loss to Guardiola's Barcelona, but drew 3-3 away. With Málaga CF, the Chilean lost all four Liga games against Guardiola's Barça.

• Agüero hit the opening goal past Neuer when Argentina won a friendly rematch of the World Cup final 4-2 in Dusseldorf on 3 September.

• David Silva and substitute Jesús Navas, along with Xabi Alonso, beat Arjen Robben's Netherlands 1-0 in the 2010 World Cup final. Robben helped the Dutch avenge that defeat with a 5-1 victory over Silva's Spain at the World Cup in June.

• Bacary Sagna was in the Arsenal side beaten by Bayern in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 rounds of 16.

• Yaya Touré played under Guardiola in the Barcelona team that beat Bayern 5-1 on aggregate in the 2008/09 quarter-finals.

• Kompany was in the RSC Anderlecht team eliminated from the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage after a 1-0 defeat at a Bayern side including Claudio Pizarro and Schweinsteiger.

• Demichelis played for Bayern (2003-11); Boateng for City (2010/11).

• The 4-0 loss in last season's semi-final second leg against Real Madrid CF was Bayern's heaviest home defeat in European competition.

• On 13 August Bayern lost 2-0 in the German Super Cup at Borussia Dortmund, with Javi Martínez sustaining a serious knee injury that will rule him out for at least six months.

• Franck Ribéry, back after a knee problem, marked his first appearance of the season with a goal in Saturday's 2-0 win at home to VfB Stuttgart.

• Holger Badstuber, out with a knee injury since December 2012, returned to first-team action on 17 August as Bayern won 4-1 at third tier SC Preussen Münster in the German Cup first round. He went off with a thigh problem on Saturday and faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after it was diagnosed as a ruptured tendon.

• Gianluca Gaudino, 17, became the fourth youngest player in Bayern history to feature in the Bundesliga as FCB kicked off their title defence with a 2-1 victory at home to VfL Wolfsburg on 22 August. Only David Alaba, Toni Kroos and Pierre Højbjerg were younger.

• Bastian Schweinsteiger (knee), Rafinha (ankle) and Mitchell Weiser (ankle) are all yet to feature for Bayern this season while Thiago Alcántara (knee) has been out since the end of March. Rafinha is back in training.

• Thomas Müller scored both goals in Germany's 2-1 win against Scotland in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying on 7 September. Mario Götze was on target in a 4-2 friendly defeat by Argentina four days earlier.

• Robert Lewandowski scored four goals as Poland opened their qualifying campaign with a 7-0 win against Gibraltar on 7 September. Pierre Højbjerg (Denmark 2-1 Armenia) and David Alaba (Austria 1-1 Sweden) were also on target.

• Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Philipp Lahm, Götze, Schweinsteiger and Müller were all in Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, with Götze scoring the decisive goal in the final against Argentina. Lahm retired from international football after the World Cup; Schweinsteiger replaces him as skipper.

• Neuer is the reigning German footballer of the year after taking the honour for the second time (after 2011) in August.

Manchester City

• Pablo Zabaleta is serving a one-game suspension following his red card in last season's round of 16 second leg against FC Barcelona. Manuel Pellegrini has a touchline ban.

• Stevan Jovetić, who scored three league goals last term, was on target twice in a 3-1 home win against Liverpool FC on 25 August.

• Sergio Agüero has struck four goals in five outings this season for club and country, and nine in his last 11 league games away from home.

• City failed to score at home for only the second time in 71 matches when they lost 1-0 to Stoke City FC on 30 August.

• Fernando, a summer signing from FC Porto, has not featured since picking up a groin injury against Stoke.

• David Silva scored his first international goal since June 2013 as Spain defeated the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 5-1 on 8 September.

• Jovetić sustained a hamstring injury in training ahead of Montenegro's UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against Moldova.

• Frank Lampard, a scorer of 29 goals in 106 appearances for England, announced his retirement from international football in August. He made his City debut in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Arsenal FC.
