• There is nothing between the sides following the goalless round of 16 first leg in Ukraine, a result that extended Shakhtar's winless UEFA Champions League run to three matches. The Pitmen, however, are unbeaten in three continental away fixtures this term.

• Bayern's ten previous games against Ukrainian clubs were all against FC Dynamo Kyiv, who beat the Munich team 3-0 (2-0h) over two legs to lift the 1975 UEFA Super Cup.

• That tie aside, Bayern won all four home fixtures against Dynamo Kyiv. Overall their record is W5 D2 L4.   

• The 2012/13 European champions eliminated Arsenal FC at this stage last year for the second successive season en route to their third semi-final in a row. Bayern triumphed 2-0 in London with Thomas Müller on the scoresheet; it finished 1-1 in Germany, Bastian Schweinsteiger breaking the deadlock.

• Top of Group E by a seven-point margin, Josep Guardiola's charges won all three home matches without conceding a goal, overcoming Manchester City FC 1-0, AS Roma 2-0 and PFC CSKA Moskva 3-0.  

• Bayern have won all but two of the 19 UEFA ties in which they drew the first leg away from home, the exceptions being against Liverpool FC in the 1980/81 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals (0-0 away, 1-1 home) and AC Milan in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals (2-2 away, 0-2 home).

• Shakhtar lost in Germany at this same juncture in 2012/13, going down 3-0 at Borussia Dortmund. At home they had drawn 2-2, leading twice through Darijo Srna and Douglas Costa with Robert Lewandowski scoring Dortmund's first equaliser. 

• In last term's group stage, the Ukrainian champions crashed 4-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and drew 0-0 at home.

• Shakhtar's most recent victory on German soil came at VfB Stuttgart in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, Fernandinho and Ciprian Marica earning a 2-0 win in which Srna also featured. The Ukrainian side's record in Germany reads W2 D1 L4.

• Shakhtar's most memorable meeting with Bundesliga opposition was their 2-1 extra-time defeat of SV Werder Bremen in the 2009 UEFA Cup final in Istanbul. Luiz Adriano scored the opener for a Shakhtar team also containing Andriy Pyatov, Srna, Olexandr Kucher and Ilsinho.

• This is Shakhtar's third appearance in the round of 16 – all in the last five campaigns. Aside from the 2013 Dortmund reverse, in 2010/11 they ousted Roma 6-2 on aggregate.

• This season they were second in Group H, five points behind FC Porto. On their travels they drew 0-0 at Athletic Club, won 7-0 at FC BATE Borisov and drew 1-1 in Porto.

• The group phase proved a personal triumph for Luiz Adriano who equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's record – set in 2013/14 – of nine goals.

• Shakhtar have drawn the home first leg in six previous UEFA competition ties and have proceeded to lose three of those, most recently against Borussia Dortmund in the 2012/13 round of 16 (2-2 home, 0-3 away). Their sole goalless home first leg, against RC Celta de Vigo in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup third round, preceded a 1-0 away defeat.

• Shakhtar lost their only UEFA penalty shoot-out 4-1 at Club Brugge KV in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

• Mircea Lucescu's Shakhtar played five times against Guardiola's FC Barcelona and suffered four defeats (including 1-0 in the 2009 UEFA Super Cup). The victory came in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage as Olexandr Gladkiy's double steered the visitors to a 3-2 Camp Nou success.

• Müller got the last goal to earn Germany a 3-3 friendly draw with Ukraine on 11 November 2011 in Kyiv. Jérôme Boateng, Holger Badstuber and Mario Götze also figured for the visitors; Kucher and Yaroslav Rakitskiy featured for Ukraine.

• Srna scored in Croatia's 2-1 win over Philipp Lahm and Schweinsteiger's Germany in the UEFA EURO 2008 group stage in Klagenfurt. Schweinsteiger was dismissed in stoppage time.

• Kucher was sent off, having also scored an own goal, in Ukraine's 2-1 friendly triumph over David Alaba's Austria in Lviv on 15 November 2011. Rakitskiy played for the hosts that day.

• Kucher was red-carded in added time of the first leg of the 2014 FIFA World Cup play-off against Franck Ribéry's France in Kyiv on 15 November 2013. Pyatov, Vyacheslav Shevchuk and Taras Stepanenko all played for Ukraine while Rakitskiy was on the bench.
