Raúl González broke Manuel Sanchís's all-time appearance record for Real Madrid CF when he came on to play his 709th competitive match for the club in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Group C tie against Olympique de Marseille. 1 Raúl made his UEFA Champions League debut on 13 September 1995 in a 1-0 group-stage loss at AFC Ajax. He scored his first goal in the competition a month later en route to a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against Ferencvárosi TC on 18 October.
