A fourth Premier League defeat of the season for Liverpool FC, FC Internazionale Milano putting five past Genoa CFC and setbacks for two of France's UEFA Champions League representatives were among the most eye-catching results ahead of Matchday 3.

Maccabi flying
A beach ball-deflected shot proved Liverpool's undoing at Sunderland AFC, while in Ligue 1 Olympique Lyonnais and FC Girondins de Bordeaux both failed to score in their weekend reverses. Elsewhere, R. Standard de Liège also tasted defeat − albeit for the first time this term in the Eerste Klasse − and Chelsea FC lost their second successive away match in the English top flight.

Perfect starts
That allowed Manchester United FC to regain top spot, a position Maccabi Haifa FC consolidated in Israel thanks to their sixth win from as many matches at the start of the Ligat Ha'Al season. Unlike Maccabi, FC Barcelona lost their 100 per cent start to the campaign after drawing with Valencia CF, a result which enabled Real Madrid CF to close within a point of the Spanish titleholders at the Liga summit.

Group A
Juventus 1-1ACF Fiorentina
(Amauri 19; Vargas 5)
Ciro Ferrara: "We are not happy with the result after a good performance against a well organised and strong team like Fiorentina. We had some problems during the second half because of the quality of their midfield. We were also tired but we always believed we could have won in the end."
AJ Auxerre 1-0 FC Girondins de Bordeaux
(Birsa 73pen)
Laurent Blanc: "I'm disappointed not to get a point in Auxerre. We have a problem with our strikers not taking their chances but there are, of course, some positives to draw from the first half which we did not exploit. Now we must focus on the Champions League game to come."
Hapoel Beer-Sheva FC1-3 Maccabi Haifa FC
(Kadousi 17; Dvalishvili 10 70, Arbeitman 27)
Elisha Levi :
"Our Champions League form is improving with every game and we will be looking to score our first goal. We have no intention of changing our style as we will come and play attacking football, even against Juventus."
SC Freiburg 1-2 FC Bayern München
(Reisinger 90; Müller 42, Cha 68og)
Louis van Gaal: "We dominated the game in the first half but we couldn't keep possession. We didn't give them a sniff and in the second half we controlled things again. I was a bit disappointed with the goal we conceded, it was unnecessary. Nevertheless, I'm satisfied overall."

Group B
VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach
(Madlung 45, Gentner 90+2; Bradley 90+3)
Armin Veh: "I was aware that it would be difficult today. Our opponents sat very deep and waited for counterattacks, something they did very well. In the first half we hit the woodwork twice; if they had gone in then it would have been easier. I'm satisfied about the result, but not with the game. All in all we deserved the win."
PFC Spartak Nalchik1-1 PFC CSKA Moskva
(Amisulashvili 26; Krasić 2)
Juande Ramos: "Both teams tried to give their all for the victory and I see 1-1 as a fair result. Missing Sergei Ignashevich and Vasili Berezutski played a part. Usually players return in different conditions after their involvement in international matches. We definitely felt it."
Beşiktaş JK 2-1 Kasimpasa SK
(Nihat 8, Bobô 37; Moritz 89pen)
Mustafa Denizli: "It was a hard game because Kasımpaşa put up a big fight having not lost in their past two matches. I really respected that. After scoring an early goal we were about to make our job easier but the rest never followed. In the second half we didn't create many chances."
Manchester United FC 2-1Bolton Wanderers FC
(Knight 5og, Valencia 33; Taylor 75)
Sir Alex Ferguson: "It was more tense than we would have liked. We made it hard for ourselves and we were panicking at times but we got through it, just. This is a tough league. There have been some surprise results already but we have had a couple ourselves, losing at Burnley and drawing at home to Sunderland."

Group C
FC Zürich 7-0FC Locarno (round of 16, Swiss Cup)
(Alphonse 46 64, Vonlanthen 52, Schönbächler 59, Margairaz 67pen, Nikci 74pen, Abdi 90)
Bernard Challandes: "At the beginning we misfired but after the opening goal it was relatively easy. This was a very important win and after the second goal the match was decided. Now we can prepare for the big game against Marseille calmly."
Real Madrid CF 4-2 Real Valladolid CF
(Raúl 14 18, Marcelo 45, Higuaín 79; Alemán 29, Marquitos 53)
Manuel Pellegrini: "I didn't see defensive frailties on our part. One of their goals came from a free-kick while they had 12 corners and didn't manage a single goal. We played well, above all in the first half when we were the superior team. In the second half we had a chance to go 4-1 up but we made an error soon after and it was 3-2. The team took their foot of the gas slightly when we scored the fourth as we had one eye on the Champions League game coming up."
AS Nancy-Lorraine 0-3 Olympique de Marseille
(Valbuena 5, Brandão 78, Abriel 81)
Didier Deschamps: "I was not worried [after three losses in a row in all competitions] because I know the potential and quality of the players. They struggled to express it before the international break. Tonight, they produced many good things and controlled the game. What we lacked in the last [few] games we have now."
AC Milan 2-1 AS Roma
(Ronaldinho 56pen, Pato 67; Menez 3)
Leonardo: "This success counts a lot because of our spirit. The victory is important not only for the three points; it is a demonstration of our courage. All the players were very good, especially Thiago Silva, who made a big mistake when Roma scored but was great in the second half. I like attacking football and I always want to see my team 'flying' on the pitch."

Group D
Aston Villa FC 2-1 Chelsea FC
(Dunne 32, Collins 52; Drogba 15)
Carlo Ancelotti: "We lost the game because of two set-plays. We need to be more focused on the situation. Chelsea played well and we didn't want to lose the game in that situation, only if the other team plays better than us. Aston Villa were very able from set-plays. We want to do better for sure. We need more concentration."
FC Porto 4-0 Sertanense FC
(Hulk 6 86; Farías 10pen, 39)
Jesualdo Ferreira: "It was a comfortable match for us but we missed too many chances to score more goals. This was a game which ended a difficult cycle for the team because national team matches mean players are overloaded with work. Taking that in account it was only normal that I decided to rest some players."
CA Osasuna 3-0 Club Atlético de Madrid
(Pandiani 4 27, Aranda 30)
Abel Resino: "We gave everything we had but football is not being fair with us. We had a lot of chances and [Osasuna goalkeeper] Ricardo was sensational; you can't say we didn't try. They sunk us with two goals from their first two attacks in the game; that was particularly hard to take. We can't hide the fact that we are poorly positioned in the standings but there's nothing else to be done other than continuing to work hard."
APOEL FC
No game

Group E
Sunderland AFC1-0 Liverpool FC
(Bent 5)
Rafael Benítez: "The goal was a special situation but we didn't play well. It changed the game but we made some mistakes and gave the ball away. They had some chances and when we had our chances we didn't take them. It's a bad situation for us that the [inflatable] ball was influential but again I will say we didn't play well, that's the main thing for me. In a normal season teams at the top would be winning every game and it would be a long distance to the top but Chelsea have lost two games and we'll see a lot of top teams lose games."
Vasas SC 2-4 Debreceni VSC
(Dobrić 10 70; Coulibaly 26 89, Kiss 53, Leandro 86)
András Herczeg: "It was the third time this season that we have made a game hard for ourselves. After we went down to ten men we started to concentrate on getting a good result and I am grateful that the team finally scored important goals to win this game."
Olympique Lyonnais 0-2 FC Sochaux-Montbéliard
(Faty 17, Privat 89)
Claude Puel: "We fell behind and struggled to level. We clearly dominated the second half, putting them on the back foot without success. One or two opportunities could have changed this but we were not precise enough. Congratulations to Sochaux for a deserved win."
Juventus 1-1 ACF Fiorentina
(Amauri 19; Vargas 5)
Cesare Prandelli: "We can be satisfied with the performance, we always tried to attack and I liked our attitude. The most important thing is that until last season we would have been happy with the point collected, while today I saw my players quite sad in the dressing room because they thought they deserved to win."

Group F
Genoa CFC0-5 FC Internazionale Milano
(Cambiasso 6, Balotelli 31, Stanković 45, Vieira 66, Maicon 71)
José Mourinho: "My team played great, every player did well in what was a difficult time because they all spent the last week with their national teams. Nonetheless, they showed the right mentality; they were calm even though we were playing away against a strong team like Genoa."
Valencia CF 0-0 FC Barcelona
Josep Guardiola: "We came here to win but we didn't achieve that because they made things difficult for us. We aren't capable of winning 38 games in a Liga season. The league is a long process and we're trying to maintain stability within that process. They played well and created problems for us in the first half. In the second period we had more of the ball and were better but we can't win all the time."
FC Dynamo Kyiv 2-1FC Obolon Kyiv
(Milevskiy 74, Shevchenko 80; Yavorskiy 72)
Valeri Gazzaev: "I'm happy with our display and the outcome. The match was tough, but we needed the result and we achieved it. We've steadily prepared for the match against Inter, one which is quite crucial for us in the group."
FC Rubin Kazan 2-1 FC Khimki
(Gökdeniz 31, Kasaev 54; Antipenko 88)
Kurban Berdyev: "We had an opportunity to test guys that haven't played previously. Some of them were good, some not as good. Aleksandr Bukharov [who suffered a wrist injury] hasn't broken anything so hopefully he can play against Barcelona."

Group G
VfB Stuttgart 1-2FC Schalke 04
(Cacau 73; Rakitić 24, Kuranyi 76)
Markus Babbel: "Apart from the two individual errors, I can't have too many complaints about my team's performance. Unfortunately the two mistakes led to goals. We can take positives from this match into Tuesday night's game against Sevilla, even though our position in the table is hardly promising. Still, the team are in good spirits."
Saint Johnstone FC1-2 Rangers FC
(Samuel 17; Boyd 40, Papac 83)
Walter Smith: "It was a good finish for a full-back [Papac], getting himself into that position. Last season and this season Saša Papac has shown he is capable of getting forward. That's back-to-back wins for us and that is something we have struggled to do this season and hopefully we can keep it going. We're struggling to find consistency of performance but the signs are getting better with each game."
RC Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 Sevilla FC
(Rodríguez 38)
Manuel Jiménez: "We knew that we weren't going to be crowned champions just because we beat Real Madrid, just like we know we're not going to get relegated for losing to Deportivo. This defeat hasn't brought us back down to earth. Depor stopped our run of five consecutive league wins but we deserved something. I'm happy that everybody is treating us like one of the big teams."
FC Unirea Urziceni 1-2 SC Vaslui
(Onofraş 7; Gerlem 52, Wesley 72)
Dan Petrescu: "When we lose and when we win, we do everything together. We don't have time to be upset. We've had plenty of bad luck this year but I hope to be lucky in Glasgow. If we will win, we will forget this defeat."

Group H
Olympiacos FC 3-0 Asteras Tripolis FC
(Mellberg 35, Mitroglou 53, Zairi 67)
Zico: "The fact that high-class players like Luciano Galletti and Enzo Maresca returned to action after their injuries has given the team a boost. Now we have the luxury of making changes, resting some players – as we did today with Vassilis Torosidis – and at the same time playing attractive football."
FC Twente 3-2 AZ Alkmaar
(Perez 36, Ruiz 61, NKufo 90; El Hamdaoui 57, Wisgerhof 60og)
Ronald Koeman: "I'll be blunt about the first half – it was not good from our side. FC Twente were better. At half-time I said we had to play further forward and that [Moussa] Dembélé should play deeper. We had some good moments, and scored two goals. They made it 2-2 quickly and it became an open game. We hoped for a good result but unfortunately we did not succeed in getting that again."
KVC Westerlo2-0 R. Standard de Liège
(Dekelver 28 33)
László Bölöni: "What I can blame my players for is their attitude. I didn't feel they were eager to play as a team, to resist our opponents and to dominate them. We have problems but we can overcome them if we stand up and act as a team."
Arsenal FC 3-1Birmingham City FC
(Van Persie 16, Diaby 18, Arshavin 84; Bowyer 38)
Arsène Wenger: "We lacked a bit of sharpness and sometimes tried to force a situation individually when it was possible collectively, and that is why we did not score more goals. When we focus on our game, we can score and play the ball through any space. That is something fantastic, but we have to keep our composure."
