UC Sampdoria have appointed Domenico Di Carlo as their new coach to take the place of Luigi Delneri, who left the Genoa club to join Juventus earlier this month.

Di Carlo, 56, has signed a two-year contract at Sampdoria, who surprised many to finish in fourth place in Serie A, gaining a UEFA Champions League play-off berth in the process. The former Vicenza Calcio midfielder has previously coached AC Mantova, Parma FC and AC Chievo Verona, helping the latter avoid relegation during the last two campaigns.

"It was a difficult decision to leave Chievo, but I did not want to start a new season without being fully convinced I was doing the right thing," Di Carlo said. "When you receive the call from a team like Sampdoria you start to think – we are are talking about a team who qualified for the Champions League after all. I thank Chievo for everything they did for me. Replacing a coach like Delneri will not be easy but I'm not afraid of the challenge."
