Dortmund's Weidenfeller signs contract extension

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller has signed a two-year contract extension to tie him to the UEFA Champions League finalists until 2016.

The 32-year-old joined Dortmund from 1. FC Kaiserslautern in summer 2002 and has gone on to make 282 league appearances, helping Jürgen Klopp's team to win the 2011 and 2012 Bundesliga titles. Weidenfeller has been ever-present in Dortmund's run to this season's UEFA Champions League final and has produced several superb performances, keeping four clean sheets in the process.

Weidenfeller, who is likely to start in goal for Dortmund in the 25 May final at Wembley Stadium, expressed his delight at extending his stay with the Schwarzgelben. "The things that have developed at this club over the past few years make for an exceptionally beautiful football story," he said. "I'm proud to be part of this team, it's full of strong characters and personalities. It's a very good mix of young and experienced players that helps us perform so well together."

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc added: "We are happy that Roman agreed to extend his contract with us. He is an exceptional goalkeeper, who constantly delivers quality performances and has contributed lots to the club's success in recent years."
