Drafted into Club Atlético de Madrid's first XI to replace the suspended Diego Costa against FC Zenit, Adrián López suffered a broken cheekbone, ruling him out for three weeks.

Club Atlético de Madrid attacker Adrián López is out of his team's UEFA Champions League encounter away to FC Porto on 1 October after the 25-year-old underwent surgery to treat a fractured cheekbone.

The former UEFA European Under-21 Championship winner with Spain sustained the injury when he collided with FC Zenit defender Igor Smolnikov in the closing stages of Wednesday's 3-1 victory in the Group G opener. Following a subsequent operation on Thursday night, club medics said the 2012 UEFA Europa League winner would be absent for three weeks, sidelining him for the trip to the Estádio do Dragão to face Porto next month.

Aside from that setback, Diego Simeone's side enjoyed a perfect return to the UEFA Champions League with goals from Miranda, Arda Turan and Adrián's replacement Léo Baptistão helping see off the challenge of Luciano Spalletti's Zenit – who briefly held parity following a spectacular Hulk effort – at the Vicente Calderón.
