FC BATE Borisov's UEFA Champions League campaign did not live up to the promise of the 2-1 win against Athletic Club in their first home game, but their six Group H fixtures certainly captured the attention.
In all there were 26 goals in those matches, BATE conceding a record 24, which accounted for the majority of the 38 in the section. UEFA.com remembers the other clubs whose group campaigns have produced 25 goals or more at either end.
31: Manchester United FC 1998/99, 20-11
United's record of two wins and four draws suggests a pragmatic approach, but far from it. Their opener was drawn 3-3 with FC Barcelona – United having led 2-0 inside 24 minutes – and the return finished with the same score, eliminating the Blaugrana. Meanwhile, Brøndby IF were beaten 6-2 away and 5-0 at home, with FC Bayern München held 2-2 away and 1-1 at home. United, of course, were to return to the Camp Nou and face Bayern again in the final …
28: FC Barcelona 1999/2000, 19-9
The following season Barcelona made it out of their group, topping the table unbeaten with two 4-2 victories – at home to ACF Fiorentina and away to Arsenal FC at Wembley. They also thrashed AIK Solna 5-0 and drew 3-3 at Fiorentina in a game where Rivaldo scored twice on his way to ten goals in the competition, half of which came in that first group stage.
28: Manchester City FC 2013/14, 18-10
No section has ever yielded more goals than the 49 in Group D last term. Most of them arrived in City's six matches as they amassed 15 points, the most ever for a runner-up as they were pipped on head-to-head record by holders Bayern. That was despite coming from two down to win 3-2 at Bayern, who had defeated City 3-1 at home. FC Viktoria Plzeň were dispatched 3-0 away and 4-2 in Manchester, where PFC CSKA Moskva went down 5-2 – the bottom two were a record 12 points adrift of second-placed City by the end.
26: Chelsea FC 2012/13, 16-10 & FC Nordsjælland, 2012/13, 4-22
Chelsea made some unwanted history as the first holders to be eliminated in the group stage, but they at least provided entertainment aplenty in picking up their ten points, as did the team finishing below them, Nordsjælland. All of Chelsea's games produced at least three goals, including home victories against FC Shakhtar Donetsk (3-2) and Nordsjælland (6-1). Shakhtar edged them out on head-to-head having won 2-1 at home, while Juve scalped the Blues 3-0 to finish two points clear. Nordsjælland had held Juve 1-1, yet otherwise lost 4-0 at home to Chelsea as well as 6-1 in London, 4-0 in Turin and 5-2 in Copenhagen against Shakhtar.
25: GNK Dinamo Zagreb 2011/12, 3-22
Nordsjælland's tally of 22 goals conceded, which BATE have now surpassed, matched a total set the previous season by Dinamo as they let in 17 in their last three fixtures. Given that punishing denouement, the Croatians' campaign had actually started relatively well, with a 1-0 home reverse to Real Madrid CF, and 2-0 losses at Olympique Lyonnais and against AFC Ajax in Zagreb.
25: Real Madrid CF, 2013/14, 20-5
Madrid, naturally, are not short of records in this regard. Last term, the eventual champions' 20 group goals equalled a record established by United in 1998/99 and equalled 13 years later by Barcelona. A season earlier, while only managing 19 strikes, Madrid's goal difference of +17 set the group stage record. Among their 20 last year were nine goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, unprecedented in the group phase, though matched by the BATE-besting Luiz Adriano this term. Ronaldo's haul included a hat-trick in the 6-1 win at Galatasaray AŞ, and a total of three against both Juventus and FC København.
25: Real Madrid CF, 1998/99, 17-8
It was not the first time Madrid had accounted for 25 goals in a group. In 1998/99, the holders' haul mostly came from dismantling SK Sturm Graz 6-1 at home and 5-1 away with eight different scorers, including an own goal.
25: PFC CSKA Moskva, 2013/14, 8-17
In the record-breaking group where City's games generated 28 goals last term, CSKA's matches were nearly as prolific. Of the other teams, Viktoria scored six and shipped 17 – the total scored by Bayern, who let in five.
