We wanted the three points at all costs and we could definitely have done with them given the situation in the group, but 1-1 was a fair result. Maribor did well and fought hard, so we'll have to make sure we get the points in our remaining games.

Every one of us is up for the Champions League and we all want to play in this competition, but we've had a lot of matches these past few weeks and perhaps we were feeling a little tired. We've still got every chance of going through and we need to make sure we pick something up from our next match.

I did my best to help the team and tried to score, but the ball didn't want to go in. We'll have to live with a point and press on with our next match. We believe wholeheartedly that we can do it [qualify]. Chelsea are obviously the group favourites and they're bound to go through, but we have two other evenly matched opponents in Sporting and Maribor, as we saw tonight, so we'll try and get the three points against Sporting in our next match and I'm sure we'll make it through.

Mitja Viler, Maribor defender
At first glance we can't be disappointed because we played a very solid, very good match, but in the first half we should have scored a second goal. We knew that Schalke would attack in the second half. For their equaliser I missed the pass. I wanted to … I don't know … do tiki-taka and Schalke caught us, but we played a very good game and after two matches we have two points. For us that's very good.

I don't know [if we can press on in the group], but Chelsea and the other teams will now see that Maribor from Slovenia play very good football. We can go forward and look to the next match and Chelsea will be thinking about us.

Everybody in Slovenia speaks about the Champions League because we waited 15 years [to return], and you saw the fans were great, ours too. This is the best competition in the world, so we are proud to be playing in it.

Jens Keller, Schalke coach
Clearly we are not pleased. We definitely wanted to take the three points from today's game. We started brightly, had many good attacks, but then we slipped up and were careless. We did not track back and consequently conceded the goal. Then the team tried everything, but we were too slow in our build-up and did not put enough pressure on them.

The last few weeks were very intense and physically demanding and so unfortunately we only managed a 1-1 draw. Last week we played with eight men against Frankfurt for around 30 minutes. We worked hard against Bremen, Chelsea and in the derby [against Borussia Dortmund]. To play in the Champions League just four days later is incredibly demanding. We tried to bring in four fresh players today, but we noticed that some players were on their last legs. We will get those points elsewhere. I am still confident we will reach the next round.

The advantage from winning a point at Chelsea is not gone. A fortnight ago Sporting only drew 1-1 at Maribor as well. They play in a very compact way. Since we have not won the three points at home, we have to win them elsewhere. There are still enough games. Chelsea won today and underlined their status as favourites in this group.

Ante Šimundža, Maribor coach
My first impression is that we could have taken more from this game, but we are very pleased with the point. The lads put in a very good performance and picking up a point is a very good result for us.

The equaliser was a present from Maribor to Schalke. Many things happen in football, but it is true that because of our mistake we conceded this goal. Schalke demonstrated their quality there, but, all told, it was a positive experience for us.

Even before the group stage started we said that we would take it game by game. We put in maximum effort in every match. Sure, we want to win as well, but it is too early to talk about our chances of going through. When six games are behind us, we will know where we are.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Schalke forward
We started well and we felt we were the better side, but we needed to score two or three goals. Unfortunately we didn't manage it and then we lost a bit of verve and conceded a silly goal. That made it twice as hard because they put everyone behind the ball and didn't take as many risks. We were lacking a bit in attack tonight. We're pretty much in the same situation we were in, in terms of the group. We'll prepare for our next game and try to get the win, but we really ought to have won today to be honest.
