Shakhtar v Porto background

FC Shakhtar Donetsk were unbeaten at home in last season's group stage and will hope to demonstrate similar resilience when they welcome FC Porto to the Arena Lviv.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk were unbeaten at home in last season's UEFA Champions League and will be hoping to carry on in that vein when they host FC Porto at the Arena Lviv. 

Previous meetings
• Porto won the 2011/12 group stage encounter between the teams in Ukraine when Hulk (79) and a Răzvan Raţ own goal (90) secured a 2-0 away victory.

• The full lineups on 23 November 2011 were:
Shakhtar: Rybka, Kobin (Douglas Costa 87), Kucher, Rakitskiy, Raţ, Fernandinho, Hübschman, Eduardo (Jadson 59), Mkhitaryan, Willian (Alex Teixeira 69), Luiz Adriano.
Porto: Helton, Maicon, Rolando, Otamendi, Álvaro Pereira, Fernando, Moutinho, James (Varela 81), Defour (Souza 88), Djalma (Cristian Rodríguez 73), Hulk.

• In the matchday one contest in Portugal, Luiz Adriano had put Shakhtar ahead before Hulk, who also missed a penalty, equalised. Kléber scored Porto's decisive second against visitors who had Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Dmytro Chygrynskiy sent off.

• Porto finished third in the group with Shakhtar fourth.

• The clubs' other encounters came in the 1983/84 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals. António Morais's Porto battled back from 2-0 down to win their home leg 3-2 before drawing 1-1 with Viktor Nosov's Shakhtar.

• Porto went all the way to the final, losing 2-1 to Juventus in Basel. It was the first time Shakhtar had reached a major European quarter-final – an achievement they did not match until their triumphant 2008/09 UEFA Cup run.

• Shakhtar's only home win over Portuguese opponents came in the 2010/11 group stage when they defeated SC Braga 2-0. They had previously lost against Sporting Clube de Portugal (0-1) and SL Benfica (1-2) and drawn with Boavista FC (1-1).

• Taking part in their tenth group campaign, they were unbeaten at home in last season's competition (W1 D2), finishing third in the group on eight points. Transferring to the UEFA Europa League, they were eliminated in the round of 32, losing 2-1 at home to FC Viktoria Plzeň after a 1-1 draw away.

• Shakhtar's best performance in the European Cup came in 2010/11 when they reached the quarter-finals. They opened the current campaign with a goalless draw at Athletic Club.

• The Ukrainian champions have lost only two of their last 13 home games in the UEFA Champions League group stage, winning seven.

Porto
• In the 2012/13 group stage Porto drew 0-0 at FC Dynamo Kyiv after a 3-2 home win in which Jackson Martínez scored twice. Their record in ten games against Ukrainian sides is W7 D2 L1 (W3 D2 L0 away).

• Porto won 2-1 home and away against Dynamo in the 1986/87 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final. They beat FC Bayern München in the final to claim their first European Cup.

• Porto, who overwhelmed FC BATE Borisov 6-0 on Group H's opening night, beat LOSC Lille 1-0 away in the play-offs and 3-0 overall.

• Porto's away group record in last season's group stage was W1 D1 L1, finishing third in the section. Transferring to the UEFA Europa League, they reached the quarter-finals where they were eliminated by eventual winners Sevilla FC, a 1-0 home win overturned in a 4-1 away defeat.

• The Portuguese side have won two of their last ten European away games.

• Mircea Lucescu's record in seven games against Portuguese opponents with Shakhtar is W3 D0 L4 (W2 D0 L1 away). His Romania team lost 1-0 to Portugal at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, and then won 3-2 in a Lisbon friendly the following year. 

• Adrián López scored in Spain's 3-0 win over a Ukraine side including Rakitskiy and Taras Stepanenko in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship group stage in Herning on 19 June 2011. Julen Lopetegui was in charge of Spain.

• Prior to matchday one, Shakhtar had won eight out of eight in all competitions this season.

• Shakhtar's run of 12 successive league victories ended when they lost 1-0 at home to FC Zorya Luhansk on 21 September, the Pitmen's first top-flight defeat since 12 April.

• Maksim Malyshev's strike for Zorya was the first goal conceded by Shakhtar in 644 minutes in all competitions. Their defence had not been breached since a 2-1 success at FC Vorksla Poltava on 1 August.

• Serhiy Kryvtsov injured his right ankle against Zorya and will be out for up to six weeks.

• Shakhtar returned to winning ways on 25 September with a 5-1 victory at FC Poltava in the first leg of their Ukrainian Cup round of 16 tie. Olexandr Gladkiy was among the scorers on his 300th club appearance.

• Dmytro Chygrynskiy, fit again after injury, captained the side against Poltava as he made his first competitive appearance since 23 November 2013.

Porto

• Porto are nine games unbeaten in 2014/15 but, after opening their campaign with five successive wins, have drawn three of their last four matches.

• Óliver Torres returned after three games out with a shoulder injury on Friday as Porto were held 1-1 at Sporting Clube de Portugal.

• Andrés Fernández and Iván Marcano made their Porto debuts in the goalless draw against city rivals Boavista FC on 21 September.

• Porto played 65 minutes with ten men against Boavista after Maicon was dismissed for the third time in his Dragons career.
