Group leadership up for grabs

Group B rivals Arsenal FC and AFC Ajax meet tonight as the UEFA Champions League returns after a two-month break.

Perfect records
FC Barcelona defend their perfect European record at Camp Nou against Internazionale FC. The Spanish giants have won all ten Champions League games so far, including victories against Legia Warszawa in the qualifying round and wins in all eight group matches. Should they prevail tonight, they will break AC Milan's ten-year record for consecutive victories in the competition. The Italian side won their first ten games in the 1992/93 Champions League before losing to Olympique de Marseille in the final.

Stern test
Antic's arrival has boosted Barcelona's domestic fortunes - a 2-2 draw against Athletic Club Bilbao followed by Saturday's 2-0 derby win at RCD Espanyol. But Inter, who also have six points from two second group stage matches, should be their toughest test yet despite a weekend defeat by AC Chievo Verona.

Disappointing starts
In the other Group A encounter, Hörster debuts as coach of 2002 finalists Bayer 04 Leverkusen following Sunday's dismissal of Klaus Toppmöller - and starts with a must-win game against Newcastle United FC. Neither team has managed a point so far, although both reached this stage having won three and lost three of their first-phase matches.

Differing fortunes
Despite the similarities in European form, the two sides' domestic fortunes could not be more contrasting. Newcastle are third in the Premiership and well placed to qualify for next season's Champions League, while Leverkusen, 1. Bundesliga runners-up in 2001/02, languish in 15th position, above the relegation zone on goal difference only.

Top two meet
The top two also meet in Group B as AFC Ajax visit English champions Arsenal FC, who have former Ajax players Dennis Bergkamp and Nwankwo Kanu in their ranks. Both teams have four points, but Arsenal are buoyed by Saturday's impressive 2-0 victory at Manchester United FC which booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Domestic dominance
Having rested key players for that match, Arsène Wenger will be looking for his side to carry their league form into Europe, while opposite number Ronald Koeman will hope his team can pick up where they left off before the winter break, when they drew against Valencia CF in Spain before defeating AS Roma at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Crucial game
Meanwhile, Roma take on Valencia at the Stadio Olimpico knowing that a defeat will probably spell the end of their challenge. Beaten 3-1 by Arsenal and then 2-1 in Amsterdam, Fabio Capello's men must improve on a home record which shows no wins in this season's competition if they are to avoid elimination. Valencia have drawn both their games so far, but are in confident mood having won four of the last five Primera División fixtures.
