With the countdown well and truly on as we look towards this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign, UEFA.com has picked out five helpful tips for any newcomers to #UCLfantasy looking to pick the ideal Matchday 1 squad.

Your captain is the most important player in your squad on any given matchday, with their points score being automatically doubled. In #UCLfantasy you have the option to switch captaincy as the matchday progresses should your original captain selection fail to earn the points you expected of them. Make sure to select a squad that has a player you deem suitable to be selected as your captain for Tuesday’s matches, but also a player who appears a worthwhile captaincy option for Wednesday as well, then you can make the switch should your Tuesday captain not score as highly as you hope.

An even spread of players

With all matchdays in the group stage spread out over two days, creating a squad with an even spread of players across both days is advisable. As with the captain, you have the option to make substitutions following Tuesday's matches, which gives you the chance to replace any low-performing players in your squad with those who will be in action on Wednesday. A case in point is the two goalkeepers you select for your 15-man squad; as you want to give yourself two opportunities when it comes to clean sheets, make sure they play on opposing days.

Keep an eye on domestic form

Those players performing well for their domestic sides are likely to prove good picks heading into Matchday 1 and beyond. Examples include Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has scored five goals in his opening four Premier League games, whilst last season’s #UCLfantasy top scorer Robert Lewandowski found the net four times in Bayern’s most recent Bundesliga fixture. Last season’s budget darling Erling Braut Haaland has understandably received a price hike this time around but is looking as lethal as ever for club and country, and Atlético are looking their usual solid selves with goalkeeper Jan Oblak having kept two clean sheets in his opening three Spanish Liga matches, conceding just one goal.

Watch out for injuries and suspensions

The most important ingredient to a successful #UCLfantasy squad is selecting 15 players who are all virtually guaranteed to start for their respective sides, so be aware of any potential injuries or suspensions that might affect selection. Keep an eye on UEFA.com for predicted line-ups of all teams featuring in Matchday 1 as we move closer to the deadline to submit your 15-man squad.

Don’t be late

Speaking of the deadline, you have until the first kick-off on Matchday 1 (18:55 CET on Tuesday 20th October) to finalise your initial squad, with that deadline for transfers remaining at the same time on a Tuesday throughout the group stage. This gives you the opportunity to check the starting line-ups of the first games taking place every matchday before submitting your final squad, so be sure to leave any decisions regarding your squad as late as possible in order to make use of that knowledge. Additionally, the substitution and captain change deadline will always be the time of the first kick-off on Wednesday.

Best of luck!
