Of all the defenders who featured on Matchday 7, just two accrued over ten #UCLfantasy points with Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy (€5.5m) returning 14 after scoring the only goal in his side's 1-0 win at Atalanta. Trailing just behind him was Manchester City's João Cancelo (€5.8m), the Portuguese full-back registering 11 points in a 2-0 away victory for Josep Guardiola's side against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
As we look towards the second legs, all eyes will be upon the current highest scoring defender in #UCLfantasy. Atalanta's Cristian Romero (€5.3m) has accumulated 55 points over the past seven matchdays with three clean sheets and a massive 82 ball recoveries to his name, which is the most all players still competing in this season's UEFA Champions League. Ball recoveries have contributed to 25 of Romero’s 55 points so far and with Atalanta looking to turn around a one-goal deficit against Madrid on Matchday 8, the Argentinian provides multiple avenues to score #UCLfantasy points.
Cancelo will likely prove a shrewd option once again for Fantasy managers heading into Matchday 8. Manchester City continue to rack up clean sheets in the UEFA Champions League with six in their seven matches so far, and Guardiola's men will know that another strong outing defensively will ensure their safe passage into the quarter-finals. An assist on Matchday 7 also gave a reminder of Cancelo's attacking prowess and that, combined with his potential for clean-sheet points, makes him an attractive prospect for #UCLfantasy managers.
On the topic of full-backs, Andy Robertson (€6.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (€6.7m) will be aiming to help Liverpool keep a sixth clean sheet of this season's competition on Matchday 8, as the reigning Premier League champions defend a two-goal first-leg lead against Leipzig. Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are the fourth and fifth highest scoring defenders in #UCLfantasy so far and have the potential to combine defensive solidarity with attacking potency. Alexander-Arnold in particular has shown plenty of potential going forward, with his role at set-pieces helping him to two assists in the five matchdays in which he has featured.
Dortmund conceded just once at home over the course of their three home group games and in the knowledge that another clean sheet against Sevilla on Matchday 8 will take them through to the quarter-finals, centre-back Mats Hummels (€5.3m) may prove a good option for #UCLfantasy managers. The same scenario applies to Porto against Juventus and with Sérgio Conceição's side having already kept five clean sheets in their seven UEFA Champions League matches so far this season, defender Chancel Mbemba (€4.9m), at just 4% ownership, could prove an ideal differential.
