Champions League Fantasy Football: Midfielders

Bayern München offer a number of high-profile options, although the likes of Mohamed Salah, Bruno Fernandes and Pedro Gonçalves are also appealing.

Midfielders come under the spotlight in the run-up to Matchday 7 as UEFA.com looks at some of the top-performing assets so far on #UCLfantasy, presented by Playstation.

Highlights: Bayern 3-0 Barcelona

Having amassed 65 points during the group stage, Leroy Sané (€9.4m) is comfortably the highest point-scoring #UCLfantasy midfielder, and indeed leads the rankings across all positions. The German winger started all six Group E games for Bayern and produced four double-digit hauls thanks to five goals and four assists, with three of his strikes coming from outside the penalty area. Two Player of the Match awards further boosted Sané's Fantasy total, and he is sure to be a popular asset when Bayern take on Salzburg in the round of 16.

#UCLfantasy managers looking to double or even triple up on the Bayern midfield may well consider Serge Gnabry (€10.4m) and Kingsley Coman (€8.6m) too. Gnabry was used sparingly during the group stage but still registered two goals and two assists, while Coman has scored at least six Fantasy points in Bayern's last four UEFA Champions League games.

Highlights: Milan 1-2 Liverpool

Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku was second on the list of #UCLfantasy point-scoring midfielders in the group stage, but with the Bundesliga outfit having been eliminated, it is Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (€10.9m) who is now next in line. The ever-dependable Egyptian scored seven goals for the Premier League side in Group B, more than any other Fantasy midfielder, to earn himself 52 #UCLfantasy points. Two of his strikes came against AC Milan and Salah will now have an opportunity to test the defence of the Italian club's city rivals, with Inter the opponents for Liverpool in the round of 16.

Highlights: Villarreal 0-2 Man. United

Elsewhere in the premium bracket, Bruno Fernandes (€10.9m) has been quietly racking up the points thanks to a competition-leading six assists to date. The Portuguese international has created a goal in all five of his UEFA Champions League starts this season and, having found his scoring boots in the Premier League lately, could be an explosive asset for #UCLfantasy managers in the knockout stage.

Speaking of midfielders with a high point ceiling, Pedro Gonçalves (€8.2m) produced successive 18-point returns during the group stage. The Sporting CP man logged four goals and two assists overall, yet has still been overlooked by many #UCLfantasy managers with his ownership currently just 2%.

Highlights: Atalanta 2-3 Villarreal

When it comes to value for money, however, few can compete with Arnaut Danjuma (€6.8m), whose four goals and two assists have contributed towards a Fantasy total of 44 points. His double at Atalanta on Matchday 6 was integral to Villarreal's progression to the round of 16, where Unai Emery's side will face Juventus. In just 3% of Fantasy squads at present, Danjuma represents a highly affordable differential option.

Bargain hunters have been quick to flock to Chelsea's Jorginho (€6.7m) given he is the reigning European champions' penalty taker, and his two-goal return against Malmö on Matchday 3 was just reward for that faith. Noah Okafor (€5.4m), meanwhile, has three goals and two Player of Match awards to show for his efforts so far, with astute #UCLfantasy managers catching on to the fact that he has been operating as a striker for the Austrian side. Okafor's generous price tag makes him an excellent budget enabler in the middle of the park.
