What happened in the first leg?
Having followed up their stunning 3-0 win at Juventus with back-to-back domestic defeats, Villarreal could have been forgiven for making a slow start. They did quite the opposite, though, Arnaut Danjuma diverting Daniel Parejo's shot beyond Manuel Neuer after just eight minutes. The Yellow Submarine absorbed long periods of Bayern pressure thereafter, but it was Unai Emery's men who went closest to another goal when Gerard Moreno struck the base of a post.
Away goals rule abolished
There has been a rule change for 2021/22: ties level after the second leg will go to extra time and a penalty shoot-out if required, irrespective of the number of away goals a team has scored.

Jordan Maciel, Bayern reporter: In Julian Nagelsmann's own words, both he and his side "have a lot of work to do" before kick-off on Tuesday evening. The six-time winners are far from their best form and carry all the pressure on their shoulders. Should they overturn last week's disappointing defeat, order will be restored. However, failure to progress from a tie in which they were considered such strong favourites would fall far below the high expectations set at this club.
Delfín Ramírez, Villarreal reporter: Unai Emery must be thinking along the lines of: 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it'. He will surely pick the same team that excelled in Munich, not least considering that all 11 players started Saturday's 1-1 Liga draw with Athletic on the bench. If Villarreal can produce another display like they did last week, they might just have a chance.

Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern coach: "We can't give Villarreal the time they need to find their rhythm. We need to be more unpleasant to play against. However, we shouldn't spend too much time talking about it, and instead need to make sure we deliver tomorrow."
Unai Emery, Villarreal coach: "We must show Bayern an enormous amount of respect. It will be very difficult and we must know how to respond. We know they're used to scoring a lot of goals at home and that's normal for them. They have respect for us too, but they know that if they perform at their very best, they are the favourites to win. They will feel strong and optimistic playing at home."
