Bayern narrow stadium list to two

FC Bayern München have narrowed their choice of projected new stadium designs to two and will make a final decision in February.

New home for 2006
The world and European champions are planning to leave the Olympiastadion and move into a new home which would be ready in time for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. A report on Bayern's official website (www.fcb.de) says the club has eliminated six designs from the selection process and will now choose between the remaining two models, designed by the Munich-based architects Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and Von Herzog and De Meuron of Basel. The final decision is due on 8 February 2001.

Hosted World Cup final
Bayern hope that the new stadium will be one of the main venues for the World Cup finals in 2006. Their present home, the Olympiastadion, was built to host the 1972 Olympic Games and was the venue for the 1974 FIFA World Cup final.
