Alex Miller has been appointed new coach of Swedish champions AIK Solna.

The Scotsman steps in to replace Björn Wesström, who stays on as assistant to the new boss. Miller, who has signed an initial 18-month contract at AIK, told the club's website: "I share AIK's philosophy of playing football – not just 'kicking' football." The Swedish champions have been struggling this season and lie 14th in the 16-team Allsvenskan.

Former Hibernian FC and Aberdeen FC manager Miller has also held assistant coaching roles at Coventry City FC and Liverpool FC, and was on Rafael Benítez's staff when the Merseyside club won the UEFA Champions League in 2005. AIK will meet Luxembourg outfit AS Jeunesse Esch in that same competition in the second qualifying round next month.
