Valencia CF coach Unai Emery stressed it is "between us and Rangers for second place" after the sides drew 1-1 in Glasgow, with sights already trained on the rematch at Mestalla.

Walter Smith expressed his disappointment that Rangers FC were unable to convert more than one of their chances in a 1-1 draw with Valencia CF which leaves the Scottish champions a point ahead of their opponents in Group C. The hosts' manager is nonetheless looking forward to a rematch at Mestalla in a fortnight which Unai Emery feels could be "decisive" in deciding who progresses.

Walter Smith, Rangers manager
We were possibly a bit nervous to start with but after 15 minutes we created the first real opportunity, settled and created a number of clear-cut chances. We have to be pleased with that against a side like Valencia, but we're disappointed not to have three points. The second game is going to be big for us but if we play as we've done in the first three games we've got a chance. I'm delighted with how we're playing and hopefully that will continue for our three remaining matches.

There is frustration at this level when you concede from set plays. I said to the boys that losing a goal from a set play in the Champions League is bad – if they cut you open then fair enough. There's still nine points to play for. Bursaspor have a couple of home games left and that's always an awkward place to go. We're in a better position than previously but at least we have an opportunity to play European football after Christmas, although we still have a bit of work to do.

Unai Emery, Valencia coach
A draw was a fair result but it's one that leaves us needing to win our next game. We came here to win but are leaving with a draw. Right now we're not thinking about who are the favourites to get through. We will be looking to the return encounter with optimism because, after tonight, we know Rangers a lot better. In the second half we controlled things better whereas in the opening 45 minutes they created a lot of problems on the counterattack.

Going back to the first period; there were moments where we didn't read the game well and they were able to play to their strengths. In all honesty today there were times when we were below the expected standard. In the return game we have to correct some things but the opportunity is there to win in front of our fans. It looks like it's between us and Rangers for second place so the second game could be decisive.
