• Pavel Hapal's side beat second division MFK Tatran Liptovský Mikuláš 3-0 on 1 December to complete the lineup for the Slovak Cup semi-finals. Žilina, who have never lifted the trophy, won the away leg 1-0 on 11 November.

• The match took place on an artificial pitch near Zilina after heavy snow at the Štadión MŠK Žilina. "Playing in those conditions should help us against Spartak," said Hapal.

• The Slovakian titleholders go into the winter break six points clear at the top of the First League.

• Žilina have scored 38 goals in 18 league games this season, 11 more than at this stage last term.

• Spartak were not in action at the weekend having ended their Premier-Liga campaign on 28 November with a 1-1 draw at FC Dinamo Moskva.

• Runners-up in four of the previous five seasons, Spartak finished fourth this time around.

• Welliton broke the deadlock at Dinamo, taking his tally to 19 goals in 25 league appearances this season – five more than any other player. He registered 21 times in the Premier-Liga last term.

• Both sides were reduced to ten men, with Aiden McGeady shown a straight red card on 78 minutes.

• Nicolas Pareja and coach Valeri Karpin missed the game through suspension; Croatian midfielder Filip Ozobić, 19, made his Spartak debut as a late substitute.

• Spartak failed to win a game in November, drawing three and losing three. Their last victory came on 30 October when they beat FC Rostov 2-1 courtesy of a last-minute penalty from McGeady.

• Karpin's side nevertheless lost just one of their last 12 league games, keeping six clean sheets in the process.

• Alex has featured just twice since 15 October because of a recurrent thigh muscle injury.
