SV Werder Bremen midfielder Tim Borowski underwent surgery on his persistent ankle problem on Tuesday. It is not yet known when he is likely to return to action.
The 30-year-old last played in Bremen's 4-0 UEFA Champions League defeat by FC Internazionale Milano on 29 September and has been restricted to just four Bundesliga appearances this term. "I cannot put pressure on my foot but I will try to do some individual training sessions as soon as possible," Borowski said.
Defender Clemens Fritz, meanwhile, is suffering from a minor thigh injury sustained in Tuesday's 2-1 German Cup defeat by FC Bayern München and is a doubt for Bremen's match against 1. FC Nürnberg on Saturday. Bremen are third in UEFA Champions League Group A, level on two points from three games with FC Twente whom they welcome next Tuesday.
