A UEFA Europa League winner with FC Porto last season, 33-year-old André Villas-Boas has been confirmed as Chelsea FC coach on a three-year deal.

The previous incumbent at Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelotti, was dismissed in May having led the Blues to a second-placed Premier League finish a year after he engineered a domestic double in his first campaign in charge.

Villas-Boas went one better with Porto in 2010/11, guiding them – unbeaten – to the Portuguese Liga title, as well as the Portuguese Cup and the UEFA Europa League prior to resigning on Tuesday. Former assistant Vítor Pereira was appointed as his successor this morning.

"André was the outstanding candidate for the job," Chelsea said in a statement. "He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time. His ambition, drive and determination matches that of Chelsea and we are confident André's leadership will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions."

Formerly a scout for José Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and FC Internazionale Milano, Villas-Boas took his first coaching post at A. Académica de Coimbra in October 2009. An 11th-placed finish in his first campaign was enough to persuade Porto to hire him in June 2010, making him the club's youngest ever coach aged just 32.

A year on he makes the move to west London, where he will oversee UEFA Champions League group stage football next season. "André will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years," Chelsea added. "He has always been highly regarded at Chelsea and everyone here looks forward to welcoming him back and working with him."
