APOEL FC made history to reach the UEFA Champions League round of 16 where they will be joined by Arsenal FC and Bayer 04 Leverkusen after the concluding matchday five fixtures.

Ivan Jovanović's APOEL required a point at FC Zenit St Petersburg to seal progress from Group G with a game to spare. Some resolute defending earned them a goalless draw as they became the first Cypriot side to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition. Zenit need a point at FC Porto on 6 December to join APOEL after the Portuguese champions won 1-0 at FC Shakhtar Donetsk, eliminating last season's quarter-finalists from Europe.

Arsenal won 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund – Robin van Persie scoring both, taking his tally to 12 in his last eight competitive games for the Gunners. Arsène Wenger's men are through as Group F winners, but the German club are also still in contention after Olympiacos FC won 1-0 at Olympique de Marseille. The French side visit Dortmund on matchday six knowing victory will take them through, with Olympiacos, a point back, hosting Arsenal. Dortmund need to beat Marseille by more than three goals and hope Arsenal win.

Manuel Friedrich struck an added-time winner as Leverkusen came from a goal down to defeat Chelsea 2-1, seal their qualification and go top of Group E. The second qualifying berth in the section goes to a straight shoot-out between the London club and Valencia CF, who recorded their biggest ever win in UEFA club competition, overwhelming KRC Genk 7-0, who are now out of Europe. Chelsea host Valencia in two weeks' time – as long as Leverkusen pick points against Genk, a 0-0 stalemate takes the Blues through and any score draw would be enough for the Spanish side.

Group H, by contrast, is much clearer. FC Barcelona won at AC Milan 3-2 to claim top spot, while FC Viktoria Plzeň's 1-0 success at FC BATE Borisov means the Belarusian side need victory at Camp Nou to claim the UEFA Europa League berth. A draw for Plzeň at home against Milan would make it academic.
