FC København have signed Danish international forward Nicolai Jørgensen on a one-year loan from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

FCK, who missed out on the Danish title to first-time champions FC Nordsjælland this spring, have the option to sign the 21-year-old on a permanent basis at the end of the loan. Jørgensen joined Leverkusen from Danish second division outfit Akademisk Boldklub in 2010, and has been allowed to return to his homeland after failing to make an impact at the Bundesliga club. The tall striker represented hosts Denmark at the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and has won two senior caps for his country.

"There were other clubs in the picture, but FCK were my main priority from the start", said Jørgensen, who spent the second half of 2011/12 on loan at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. "Right now I am looking forward to starting pre-season training at FCK and to meeting my new team-mates."

København sporting director Carsten V. Jensen said: "Nicolai has great potential, and together we shall see how far we can bring it. I am in no doubt that we're getting a player who is highly motivated, and in due time I am sure he will show his best."

København start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the third qualifying round, with the first legs taking place on 31 July and 1 August.
