Dortmund primed to end Málaga's glory run

After a goalless first leg, Borussia Dortmund will be trying to end Málaga CF's remarkable debut UEFA Champions League campaign when the sides reconvene in Germany.

Borussia Dortmund will be trying to end Málaga CF's remarkable debut UEFA Champions League campaign when the sides meet in Germany for their quarter-final return.

• The 0-0 first leg was the teams' first ever fixture and the first time the Spanish club had met German opposition.

Match background
• This is Dortmund's fourth encounter with Spanish opponents in this season's competition. On matchday three, they beat Real Madrid CF 2-1 at home with Robert Lewandowski and Marcel Schmelzer on target, that result and a subsequent 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu helping the Bundesliga club finish three points ahead of the nine-time European champions in Group D.

• The Madrid win was Dortmund's first at home against Spanish teams in six games; the previous five had ended in three draws and two defeats.

• Dortmund beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 at home in the last 16 after a 2-2 away draw and have won all four home games in this season's competition. They are in the last eight for the first time since 1997/98, when, as holders, they lost in the semi-finals. Between 1996 and 1998, they progressed at least as far as the quarter-finals every year.

• When Málaga lost 1-0 at FC Porto in the round of 16 first leg – they won the home game 2-0 – it was their first UEFA Champions League defeat. The previous eight games, starting with Panathinaikos FC in the play-offs, produced four wins and four draws; away from home, it was one victory and three draws before defeat in Portugal.

• If Málaga reach the semi-finals, they will match the debut-season achievement of Manuel Pellegrini's Villarreal CF, who lost to Arsenal FC in the last four in 2005/06.

• The Spanish club have twice been held at home in European competition, and each time they went through. The previous draws also ended 0-0, both coming in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup. Leeds United AFC were beaten 2-1 in the third round second leg, and AEK Athens FC succumbed 1-0 at home a round later.

• The first leg was Dortmund's eighth away first-leg draw in UEFA competition; they have progressed six times on aggregate after similar starts, the sole exception coming against Juventus in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup semi-finals. The German club have also won all three ties in which they kicked off by drawing 0-0 away, including victory against FC Bayern München in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Team ties
• Martín Demichelis played at Bayern from 2003 until January 2011. He won both the Bundesliga and the German Cup four times and finished on the winning side in five of his nine games against Dortmund, also recording one draw.

• Roque Santa Cruz was at Bayern from 1999 to 2007. Alongside five league titles and four cup triumphs, he also won the 2000/2001 UEFA Champions League. In 11 league games against Dortmund, the Paraguayan striker scored three goals, his team winning six matches and losing only one.

• Nuri Şahin left Dortmund for Real Madrid CF in summer 2011 but returned on an 18-month loan in January. He scored one goal in ten appearances for the Merengues in 2011/12.

• Sebastian Kehl and Santa Cruz were on opposite sides as Germany beat Paraguay 1-0 in Jeju in the 2002 FIFA World Cup round of 16.

• Júlio Baptista was a late substitute in Brazil's 3-2 semi-final victory against Germany in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Nuremberg. Patrick Owomoyela was on the bench for Germany.

• Javier Saviola and Kehl appeared as second-half substitutes when Argentina beat Germany 1-0 in a friendly in Stuttgart on 17 April 2002.

• Saviola appeared in Argentina's 2-2 draw in another friendly against a Germany side which included Owomoyela in Dusseldorf on 9 February 2005.

• Sergio Sánchez's Spain and a Germany for whom Marcel Schmelzer came on as a replacement contested a 0-0 draw in Gothenburg during the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship group stage.

• Robert Lewandowski, Łukasz Piszczek and Jakub Błaszczykowski were in the Poland side that suffered a 3-1 friendly defeat against Diego Lugano's Uruguay on 14 November 2012 in Gdansk.

 • Lugano came up against Mats Hummels, Schmelzer and Mario Götze when Uruguay lost 2-1 to Germany in a Sinsheim friendly on 29 May 2011.
