Bayern glad to leave CSKA Moskva with points

The atmosphere in both camps was subdued after FC Bayern München's win at PFC CSKA Moskva, with the hosts' defensive approach continuing to frustrate the German side.

Josep Guardiola, Bayern coach

We knew it wouldn't be easy. Our opponents basically defended with ten men. They only had [Ahmed] Musa, who Xabi Alonso was taking care of, up front. Nevertheless, they had two very good chances. In the Champions League victories never come easily. We are happy that we were able to earn these three points.

We were a bit surprised by their lineup and game plan, but I am accustomed to this style of play. Not long ago we faced 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga and they played against us in pretty much the same manner. We tried to move the ball and stretch their defence.

It's never easy. It wasn't easy 50 years ago, and it will still not be easy in 50 years, to play against a team with 11 players at the back – they only defend and that's difficult. But we adapted. I am happy about the way we interpreted the game. There were very few counterattacks, but that cost us because it wasn't easy. But here we are, with three more points in this difficult group – six points out of six and a first victory in an away game. So we're on the right track.

Leonid Slutski, CSKA coach
Given our selection problems and the fact we were up against Bayern, who dominated possession, we decided to play with three central defenders. Overall, the plan worked. The only thing we were unable to do was score, despite the fact we had chances.

Against the sort of teams that we play against, it is difficult to find the recipe for success. However, our tactics did work to a certain extent. We will see in the future what happens in terms of our selection when [Alan] Dzagoev and [Pontus] Wernbloom return from suspension.

We were interested in other statistics rather than possession. For example, they had eight shots on target while we had five – that is not a big difference. We created some excellent chances, they did not create one. We planned to let Bayern take the initiative, but even if we did not do that, then they still would have taken it with both hands.

Arjen Robben, Bayern winger
We can be very happy – it was easy. One team only tried to defend and the other team wanted to attack. One goal was decisive today and we are very happy with the win and the three points. It was not nice, football should be for the fans, but you have to be professional and you have to play the game.

Mario Götze, Bayern midfielder
We did a great job, but it was a difficult match for us. We wanted the three points and we managed to get them – that was the most important thing. We have to continue winning more points.

We had a lot of possession and created a lot of great chances as well. We missed them and should have scored more goals, but we can be happy that we scored that one goal in the first half. But all in all we just were not clinical enough.

They just tried to be dangerous on the counter, and because there was no free space it was very difficult. We just need to take advantage of our chances because when there isn't much space you don't get many opportunities. So today it was about not being clinical enough.

That is the most important thing – that we have six points in this group, which I think is a pretty tough one. It was a big step we took, but we still have four matches ahead and we want to finish at the top of the group.

Mehdi Benatia, Bayern defender
The risk tonight was to fall asleep due to the lack of atmosphere, but it is very important that we won. CSKA lost the first game in Rome, so they had to win tonight, we knew that. They played a better game than the one against Roma – they had two or three chances that could have been dangerous for us. But overall we did well and took the three points, and that's the most important thing.

Of course, there are no easy games in the Champions League, we know that. CSKA are a quality team, they have very fast and technical players. They could have made it difficult for us, but overall it went well and we keep on going. We have six points out of six and we want to pick up all the points we can get in the group stage.

Roman Eremenko, CSKA midfielder
We had our moments. We created some good counterattacks, but we lacked the finish. We tried, we fought. We gave it our all, tried a lot, created many good chances. We lacked something, and that's important against teams like Bayern – you have to convert your chances into goals.
