Schweinsteiger relieved by Bayern return

"I'm just happy to be back in the fold," said Bastian Schweinsteiger after his FC Bayern München return in a 3-0 win that ended the hopes of a reflective PFC CSKA Moskva.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern midfielder
You could see that we found our rhythm pretty quickly against a team who sat deep and tried to counter. I thought we did well. We didn't give them many chances and ultimately we deserved the win.

It was great [to make my first start of the season] in front of the home fans, and when the team are playing well that obviously makes things easier for me. I'm delighted to have made it back this year. It wasn't easy being out injured, so I'm just happy to be back in the fold. I can tell I'm still lacking a few per cent but that will come with match practice.

We'll always play good football at the highest level because we have so much quality in our team, and I'm sure we'll improve on the few mistakes we’re making currently too.

Manuel Neuer, Bayern goalkeeper
Tonight was a chance for some of the players who haven't had as much playing time this season to get a game. Obviously [Schweinsteiger] was back in the starting lineup tonight and we were delighted with that.

I had an eye on the big screen and saw that [my old club] Schalke went through. They'll be delighted and it's good for German football that all four teams made it through.

Pontus Wernbloom, CSKA midfielder
Of course we wanted a good result and we didn't get it. But Bayern are probably the best team in the world and they played well today. They suffocated us with their possession. So it was a tough one, really.

[Sitting deep and hitting them on the counter] was obviously the game plan. You can't be naïve and think you're going to come here and press them because they are the best possession team in the world right now. If you think you're going to come here and press them, it's going to end up bad. It was 1-0 for a long time and we had some chances but we didn't have the quality up front to score. You have to do that or you're going to get punished.

Seydou Doumbia, CSKA forward
It was a very, very difficult match and we were well beaten in the end. I though we did well at times. It's a pity really, but what can you do? That's life.

It's a shame we didn't make it into the Europa League because that's the next best thing, but as I say, that's football and we have to live with it. Now we need to focus on the league championship and see how we get on there.

Leonid Slutski, CSKA coach
In the first half we had some good chances to score. You don't get many chances against a team like Bayern and we didn't take the ones that did come our way. We wanted to win but what could we do? I can't say any bad words about my players. They did all they could.
