• The clubs have never met before.

• Basel do have recent experience of Portuguese opposition, claiming a win and a draw against Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage. They fared less well against SL Benfica in the previous season's UEFA Champions League, going down 2-0 at home and drawing 1-1 in Lisbon.

• Overall Basel have won just two of their ten games against Liga sides, losing five. Both victories came at home, where they have lost their other three matches against Portuguese visitors.

• Porto have been beaten only once in six fixtures with Swiss teams, succumbing 3-0 at Grasshopper Club in their 1980/81 UEFA Cup second round second leg for a 3-2 aggregate reverse. They have won three of the other five games.

Julen Lopetegui, Porto coach
Basel are a great team, but we have the ambition and strength to reach the quarter-finals – knowing that we will have huge travelling support in Switzerland. That will give us a boost. In this phase of the competition, we are talking about Europe's 16 best teams, so it will be a tough task. We are lucky to be among them. As the only Portuguese team, we will defend our bid – which is also Portugal's.

There is no rule saying that playing the first leg at home is better or worse. Our goal is to achieve a good result away and then finish the job at home. However, I know the problems these two games [could] bring will be huge.

Paulo Sousa, Basel coach
We will face a traditional and successful European club in the round of 16. Porto are an outstanding, great club with strong leadership and a winning mentality. They also have a clearly defined philosophy.

Their team has a good mix between talented youngsters and strong, experienced players. This season Porto have not lost a single Champions League game so the two matches will be a huge challenge for us. But we have shown in the group stage already that we can take on any team. For me as a Portuguese coach it is a pleasure to come home and play one of the most important teams in my home country and in Europe.

Bernhard Heusler, Basel president
It has been a fantastic campaign so far, with that 'final' in Liverpool [on matchday six]. It was an unforgettable moment for us, the club, and all the fans. That is why we really feel a bit like winners before the draw.

Porto are a great name in Europe and it's exciting to have a last-16 match in the Champions League in Basel, no matter which opponent we're playing.
