Juventus v Dortmund background

Juventus and Borussia Dortmund will revive memories of the 1997 UEFA Champions League final when they meet in Turin for the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

Classic moments: Juventus v Dortmund

Juventus and Borussia Dortmund will meet for the first time since the 1997 UEFA Champions League final when they face off in the first leg of their round of 16 tie in Turin.

• For Dortmund, that final 18 years ago brought their first and only European Cup triumph to date. Two-times winners Juventus will be looking for a different outcome this time and can take heart from an impressive recent home record in Europe.

Previous meetings
• It was in Munich that Dortmund won 3-1 in the 1997 UEFA Champions League final. Substitute Lars Ricken – now Dortmund's youth co-ordinator – scored their third goal after Alessandro Del Piero had replied to Karl-Heinz Riedle's first-half double. Michael Zorc, today Dortmund's sport director, was a late substitute.

• The final lineups on 28 May 1997 were:
Dortmund: Klos, Kohler, Kree, Sammer, Reuter, Lambert, Möller (Zorc 89), Sousa, Heinrich, Chapuisat (Ricken 70), Riedle (Herrlich 67).
Juventus: Peruzzi, Porrini (Del Piero 46), Montero, Ferrara, Iuliano, Di Livio, Jugović, Deschamps, Zidane, Vieri (Amoruso 71), Bokšić (Tacchinardi 87).

• Ricken and Zorc each scored when Dortmund won 2-1 at Juventus in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• Juventus had earlier overwhelmed Dortmund 6-1 on aggregate in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup final (3-1 a, 3-0 h). They prevailed again (4-3 agg) when the teams reconvened in the semi-final of the same competition in 1994/95 (2-2 h, 2-1 a).

Match background

Juventus
• After advancing as Group A runners-up behind Club Atlético de Madrid, Juventus are looking to reach only their second UEFA Champions League quarter-final since 2006. Their most recent appearance at this stage came in 2012/13 when they defeated Celtic FC (5-0 agg).

• Massimiliano Allegri's men are unbeaten in ten home matches in UEFA competition, including their Group A victories over Malmö FF (2-0) and Olympiacos (3-2) before Christmas.

• Overall, the Bianconeri have lost just one of 15 European home fixtures at the redeveloped Juventus Stadium (W8 D6 L1).

• Juventus's home record against Bundesliga clubs is W14 D2 L5.

• Juve lost their last two home matches against German visitors – against FC Bayern München in the 2012/13 quarter-finals (0-2) and the 2009/10 group stage (1-4).

• Buffon is the only survivor of their last home success against a German side: 2-1 against SV Werder Bremen in the 2005/06 round of 16 second leg.

• Overall Juventus have a strong record in two-legged encounters with German sides: P15 W12 L3.

Dortmund
• Jürgen Klopp's men are in the last 16 for the third year running after finishing ahead of Arsenal FC at the top of Group D.

• Dortmund's record in Italy is W4 D1 L9. Their most recent visit brought a 2-1 defeat at SSC Napoli on matchday one last season.

• Dortmund last won in Italy in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round, albeit that 2-0 victory over Udinese Calcio (agg 2-2) was followed by a 4-3 loss on penalties. Roman Weidenfeller, Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer, Neven Subotić, Jakub Błaszczykowski, Sebastian Kehl and substitute Nuri Şahin all played. Błaszczykowski had a spot kick saved.

• That same group of Juventus players, minus Ogbonna but including Giorgio Chiellini, helped Italy beat Germany 2-1 in the UEFA EURO 2012 semi-final.
