"This is a hammer blow for us and a real shame for the fans after they created such a good atmosphere," said midfielder José Mari Bakero after Barcelona failed to build on a creditable 2-2 first-leg draw in Munich, Gheorghe Hagi having hit a 77th-minute equaliser for Johan Cruyff's side. Marcel Witeczek (83) scored Bayern's second at Camp Nou before Iván de la Peña's solitary reply (88) for the Blaugrana. "You don't win at Barcelona every day," beamed Jürgen Klinsmann. "We will take our time to enjoy this." Visiting coach Otto Rehhagel added: "This is a historic win for Bayern and a historic day for me." Josep Guardiola featured in the first leg for Barcelona, while goalkeeper Carles Busquets – father of Sergio – played in both games.

1999 final highlights

Ottmar Hitzfeld's Bayern beat Barcelona home and away en route to reaching that season's final. Stefan Effenberg (45) earned a 1-0 victory in Munich while, at Camp Nou, Alexander Zickler (48) and Hasan Salihamidžić (87) struck to overturn Giovanni's 29th-minute penalty. "They scored two lucky goals, which were both deflections," grumbled Barcelona boss Louis van Gaal. "It's hard to lift our spirits now because everyone is so disappointed."

A frightening first-half showing on a rainy night at Camp Nou gave Guardiola's side a first home win against Bayern, Lionel Messi notching twice and Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry ripping through the resistance of a team who had themselves scored a record 12 times against Sporting Clube de Portugal in the previous round. "We were fortunate that the score was only 4-0 because we were made to look like amateurs," said Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel. "It is quite possible we played against the future champions of Europe," predicted Bayern coach Klinsmann – correctly, it transpired. A 1-1 draw in the return restored a little dignity.

Robben's redemption

"It's crazy and I can barely believe it," said Arjen Robben after the Bavarians' jaw-dropping first-leg triumph. "Barcelona have dominated Europe for the past five years. We can be very proud." Thomas Müller netted twice, either side of goals from Mario Gomez and Robben, as Jupp Heynckes' men built up a huge first-leg lead, and there was no let-up at Camp Nou with Robben and Müller on target again as Bayern posted a record aggregate semi-final success. "When another side is so much better than you, there isn't any option except to congratulate them," said Gerard Piqué, who scored an own goal in the second leg.
