Arsenal caught cold, Bayern ease to win

A mixed day for the UEFA Champions League contenders featured a shock loss for Arsenal, a German Cup stroll for Bayern München and Sporting CP lifting the Portuguese Super Cup.

Arsenal came in for a shock in their first Premier League fixture on Sunday as a number of UEFA Champions League contenders got down to domestic tasks. We examine how they fared, with highlights elsewhere including a first Arturo Vidal goal for Bayern München and Portuguese Super Cup success for Sporting CP.

Saturday's round-up

Group stage teams:
Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
Hopes were high in north London that Arsenal would make a blistering start to the Premier League campaign, but Arsène Wenger's men were brought crashing back down to earth when Cheikhou Kouyaté headed in from a first-half free-kick. Mauro Zárate caught Petr Čech off-guard after the break to compound a disappointing afternoon for the Gunners.

"Today we have been hurt mentally and it's a good opportunity to respond," said Wenger. "It's better if we don't talk too much and continue to work hard. The players were maybe too nervous and put too much pressure on themselves."

Lyon 0-0 Lorient
Far from convincing in pre-season, Lyon got their Ligue 1 mission under way with a goalless draw after failing to find a way past Benjamin Lecomte. The Lorient goalkeeper saved an Alexandre Lacazette effort and tipped the rebound onto the post in the first half, in addition to thwarting Henri Bedimo and Arnold Mvuemba, while Samuel Umtiti turned a Raphael Guerreiro attempt onto the crossbar at the other end.

Benfica 0-1 Sporting CP
Portuguese champions Benfica missed the chance to start the season with another piece of silverware as they slipped to a narrow reverse to Lisbon neighbours Sporting in the Super Cup. New Eagles coach Rui Vitória came out second best to his predecessor Jorge Jesus after André Carrillo's low shot from distance was deflected in by Teófilo Gutiérrez on 53 minutes. "The match was quite even," said Vitória. "Sporting started better and we were a little anxious at the beginning. We know it will be a difficult season."

Nöttingen 1-3 Bayern München
There were no surprises in store for Bayern as they began their German Cup bid with a comfortable victory at fifth-tier Nöttingen. Summer signing Arturo Vidal gave the visitors an early lead with his maiden competitive strike for the club and although Nöttingen were able to level, Mario Götze struck a minute later before Robert Lewandowski added to the deficit.

Ufa 0-1 Zenit
Zenit maintained their faultless start to the Russian Premier League season with a fourth consecutive success, but they had to be patient before coming away with all three points. Substitute Danny hit the winner with four minutes remaining after having been introduced just over a quarter of an hour earlier.

Dnipro 1-2 Dynamo Kyiv
Dynamo continue to set the pace in Ukraine after seeing off 2014/15 UEFA Europa League runners-up Dnipro to put together a fourth successive triumph. A Douglas own goal gifted the Bilo-Syni the lead and Miguel Veloso doubled it ahead of the break, before Valeriy Fedorchuk attempted to kick-start a Dnipro comeback.

Anderlecht 1-1 Gent
Belgian champions Gent have now recorded two draws in their opening three league matches, but they could be pleased with a point at rivals Anderlecht after falling behind to Idrissa Sylla's 12th-minute opener. Laurent Depoitre restored parity for the visitors on the hour mark. "We dominated the second half completely," commented coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck. "We scored and could have scored again."

Play-off teams:
Vorskla 2-2 Shakhtar Donetsk
Shakhtar dropped points for the first time this term after conceding in added time at Vorskla. The hosts had levelled late in the first half following Marlos's opener for the Pitmen, and they repeated the trick when Olexandr Kovpak found the net after 92 minutes to neutralise Eduardo's second-half strike.

CSKA Moskva 2-0 Amkar
Like Zenit, CSKA have also won all four of their Russian championship outings so far – though unlike their rivals at the top of the standings, they have yet to concede this season. Leonid Slutski's side took an early lead when Bibras Natcho buried a second-minute penalty following a handball, and Zoran Tošić doubled the advantage with a fine left-footed effort from outside the area.

Charleroi 0-0 Club Brugge
Frustrated in their third contest of the new campaign, Club Brugge missed the chance to leapfrog Charleroi in the standings. New signing Hans Vanaken hit the post in the first half as the sixth-placed visitors dominated the opening period, before the hosts rallied after the restart to retain fourth spot.

Benfica 0-1 Sporting CP
Jorge Jesus returned to haunt his old side as Sporting lifted their eighth Portuguese Super Cup, the 61-year-old having taken the Lions' reins at the end of last season after six years in charge of Benfica. "We were the best team throughout the whole match and always closest to scoring," he said after a tight contest in Faro. "I'm extremely satisfied – it's one more title. Benfica are a great team but today Sporting were the best. I think Benfica feared Sporting."

Partick Thistle 0-2 Celtic
Showing no ill effects after their midweek trip to Baku, Celtic recorded a second 2-0 win in two Scottish Premier League games to continue their unblemished start. Tom Rogic and Kris Commons got the goals either side of the interval to leave manager Ronny Deila purring. "The first 35 minutes I think was some of the best we have played this season," he said. "We moved the ball well, were very good defensively and we created chances."

Malmö 2-1 Göteborg
Malmö boosted their hopes of defending their Swedish title after a battling victory against leaders Göteborg lifted them within four points of the summit. Kári Árnason put the home side in front before Markus Rosenberg converted a penalty, but Malmö had to hold on after losing Yoshimar Yotún to a 59th-minute red card and conceding a late spot kick.

Rapid Wien 2-1 Wolfsberg
Florian Kainz was the hero for Rapid Wien as the early Austrian Bundesliga pacesetters made it three wins from three. The 22-year-old midfielder registered both goals to steer his side to a comeback victory, hitting the target on 66 and 81 minutes in response to Christopher Wernitznig's first-half effort.
