CSKA and United meet in Moscow looking for more

Group B rivals CSKA Moskva and Manchester United will both be aiming to build on valuable matchday two victories when they meet in Moscow.

PFC CSKA Moskva will look to build on their home win over PSV Eindhoven when they host Manchester United FC on matchday three.

• While CSKA beat PSV 3-2 to pick up their first points in Group B, United also recovered from a losing start in the group as they came from behind to defeat VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford last time out.

Previous meetings
• It was on 21 October 2009 that the clubs met for the first time in Moscow, where United's Antonio Valencia scored the only goal after 86 minutes.

• The lineups at the Luzhniki Stadium were:
CSKA: Akinfeev, Semberas, Ignashevich, A Berezutski, V Berezutski, Odiah, Rahimić (Carvalho 90), Schennikov (Mamaev 62), Krasić, Dzagoev, Necid (Piliev 73).

• Valencia got a 92nd-minute equaliser as United came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 when the teams met at Old Trafford on 3 November. Vasili Berezutski and Alan Dzagoev were among the scorers for CSKA. It was the second match as CSKA coach for Leonid Slutski, who led them to second place in the group behind United.

• Slutski's men are unbeaten at home in this term's competition having drawn with AC Sparta Praha (2-2) and beaten Sporting Clube de Portugal (3-1) in the qualifying rounds, then overcome PSV 3-2 on matchday two.

• CSKA came from two goals down on 21 October last year to hold United's neighbours Manchester City FC 2-2 at home, with Seydou Doumbia and Bibras Natcho (penalty) the scorers. Doumbia then struck both goals in CSKA's 2-1 win in Manchester – their first on English soil.

• Igor Akinfeev, Sergei Ignashevich and Aleksei Berezutski played in CSKA's first visit to England, a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea FC on 20 October 2004.

Manchester United
• United have lost their last three away games in the UEFA Champions League proper, although they did win 4-0 at Club Brugge KV in the play-offs.

• United have won only one of seven matches, home and away, against Russian opposition.

• Ryan Giggs, their assistant manager, was in the United team beaten in a penalty shoot-out by FC Torpedo Moskva on the club's first visit to Moscow for a 1992/93 UEFA Cup first-round tie (aggregate 0-0).

United won their third European Cup at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium in 2008, beating Chelsea on penalties in a match which Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick started.

• Rooney is the only survivor of United's 2-1 defeat by FC Zenit in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup.

• As a Sparta Rotterdam player in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup third round, Louis van Gaal lost 2-0 at FC Spartak Moskva (aggregate 1-3), albeit in a match played in Tbilisi.

• As a coach Van Gaal beat FC Lokomotiv Moskva with FC Barcelona in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League first group stage (3-1 a, 1-0 h); with AZ Alkmaar he overcame PFC Krylya Sovetov Samara on away goals in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup first round (3-5 a, 3-1 h) and drew 1-1 at Zenit in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage.

• Zoran Tošić made five substitute appearances for United from 2009–10.

• Ashley Young played in Aston Villa FC's 1-1 home draw with CSKA in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup round of 32 – but did not feature in the second-leg defeat in Moscow.

• Matteo Darmian lost 3-1 at CSKA with US Città di Palermo in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage.

• Marcos Rojo spent 2011/12 with Spartak Moskva.

• In June 2005, Bastian Schweinsteiger scored twice in a 2-2 draw between Germany and a Russia side including the Berezutski brothers. Schweinsteiger played in FC Bayern München's home wins over CSKA in the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

• Marouane Fellaini was in the Belgium side that earned a 1-0 victory over the Russia of Vasili Berezutski, Akinfeev and Ignashevich at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

• Rooney scored in Moscow for England but finished on the losing side as a Russia side including the Berezutskis and Ignashevich won 2-1 in a UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier.

• CSKA are six games unbeaten (W5 D1) since their matchday one defeat.

• Wernbloom's goal in the 2-0 success at FC Dinamo Moskva on 4 October was his first since the final day of last season. He scored again to beat Ural 3-2 on Saturday.

• Doumbia has scored seven goals in his last six outings for club and country.

• Akinfeev has conceded a goal in each of his last 33 UEFA Champions League appearances, qualifying included. His last clean sheet in the competition came when CSKA drew 0-0 at Arsenal FC on 1 November 2006.

Manchester United
• United's run of four successive wins ended when they lost 3-0 to Arsenal FC on 4 October.

• Anthony Martial, after scoring three goals in four appearances, was named Premier League player of the month for September on 16 October.

• Paddy McNair spent three nights in a Helsinki hospital after rupturing his liver in Northern Ireland's 1-1 UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying draw against Finland on 11 October. He is expected to be out of action for two weeks.

• Darmian scored his first goal for Italy as the Azzurri prevailed 3-1 in Azerbaijan a day earlier.

• Rojo returned on Saturday in the 3-0 win at Everton FC after four games out with a hamstring injury.

• Luke Shaw sustained a double fracture to his right leg in a tackle by PSV's Héctor Moreno on matchday one.
