Liverpool confirm Gerrard absence

A broken foot sustained on Monday will rule Liverpool FC and England midfielder Steven Gerrard out for two months.

Liverpool FC have confirmed that captain Steven Gerrard will be out for two months with a broken foot, ruling him out of several UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Old Trafford defeat
The England midfield player was injured in the first half of the 2-1 Premiership defeat at Manchester United FC on Monday. "We are sure he has broken the fifth metatarsal of his left foot," said Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez. The 24-year-old Gerrard said: "There was no one by me when Xabi Alonso gave me the ball and as I turned I felt a crack in my ankle."

Champions League absence
Gerrard, who played a key role in Liverpool's opening 2-0 Champions League victory against AS Monaco FC, is certain to miss the trip to Olympiacos CFP next Tuesday and the visit of RC Deportivo La Coruña on 19 October. England play Wales on 5 October and then travel to Azerbaijan four days later.
