Rui Vitória satisfied at job well done by Benfica

Benfica may have left it late but all went perfectly to plan according to coach Rui Vitória, whose Zenit counterpart André Villas-Boas aims to "turn the tie" in the second leg in Russia.

Highlights: Watch last-gasp Jonas winner
  • Added-time Jonas goal gives Benfica 1-0 lead to take to Zenit
  • Rui Vitória says his Benfica team were deserved victors
  • André Villas-Boas reckons Zenit will turn the tie at home
  • Round of 16 second leg takes place at Stadion Petrovskiy on 9 March

Rui Vitória, Benfica coach
We were deserved winners against a good team. We did not take many risks, we almost always had the match under control and tactically we were perfect. We perhaps deserved to score sooner.

We knew Zenit were going to play on the counter and that they could cause a threat. We circulated the ball patiently and won thanks to our persistence.

We are now in a better position than when we started – 1-0 is always a good result in Europe – and I am almost 100% sure that we will score in St Petersburg.

I trust totally in my players and in my squad. We'll respect the opposition [in the second leg], knowing we believe in what we do. We play to create chances and we'll do the same [in Russia]. I won't change my ideas or my team's identity.

Villas-Boas hopeful of recovery

André Villas-Boas, Zenit coach
I thought it would finish 0-0 but small details are always important and Benfica managed to score late on. It would be very open at 0-0 but 1-0 is still open.

At home we will attack and try to create opportunities, which we didn't manage to do today. We prevented Benfica creating chances with crosses from the wings, with the exception of the last one, which has given them the advantage.

We have another two games before the second leg which will allow us to gain some more match fitness. It was a pity we conceded so close to the end. We wanted a 0-0 but the tie will be decided at our stadium. It is a hard venue for opposing teams, especially in front of our fans. It's a long trip for them, another time zone. This will create lots of problems for Benfica and we will try to turn the tie.
