With John Terry hanging up his boots at the age of 37, UEFA.com looks back at five of the former Chelsea captain's most memorable nights in Europe. "Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through," Terry once said, and the Blues' youth product left a major mark during his 19 years at Stamford Bridge before ending his playing days after one final season at Aston Villa.

Vålerenga 2-3 Chelsea: 1998/99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals, second leg
Aged 18, Terry made his UEFA club competition debut alongside Michael Duberry in defence as holders Chelsea reached the Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals. The youngster played his part in the opener for player-manager Gianluca Vialli on a night when Bernard Lambourde and Tore André Flo also struck for the visitors to seal a 6-2 aggregate success. A young John Carew grabbed one for Vålerenga.

Paris 0-3 Chelsea: 2004/05 UEFA Champions League, matchday one
José Mourinho's first UEFA Champions League tie as Chelsea manager was a sign of things to come, as an impressive away triumph boosted confidence in their bid to overcome the traditional powers in Madrid, Milan, Turin and Manchester. Appointed captain by Mourinho, Terry nodded the Premier League club in front before summer signing Didier Drogba added two more as the Londoners showcased a new-found belief in Europe's elite competition.

Chelsea 4-2 Barcelona: 2004/05 UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg
With his team set for elimination, Terry settled an extraordinary contest by heading in a Damien Duff corner 14 minutes from time. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, the hosts raced into a 3-0 lead but were on their way out when Ronaldinho struck twice, only for their skipper from Barking to respond with his never-say-die attitude. "This win is up there with the best of them," said Terry, who was named in UEFA.com's Team of the Year for the first of four times at the end of the season.

Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (aet, United win 6-5 on penalties): 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final
Terry's sole UEFA club final was an encounter he may prefer to forget, the England centre-back slipping as he took the shoot-out spot kick that could have clinched the trophy for the Stamford Bridge outfit. Instead, the ball clipped Edwin van der Sar's post, and Manchester United secured the title after Edwin van der Sar denied Nicolas Anelka. "I'll definitely never be over it," he once said. "I still have a few times a year when I wake up and, bang, it's on my mind."

Chelsea 4-1 Napoli: 2011/12 UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg
Chelsea finally scaled the European game's summit in 2012, and it was their unlikely victory over Napoli that provided the momentum. Defeated 3-1 in Italy, the Londoners bounced back courtesy of the old guard, Terry netting either side of goals from Drogba and Frank Lampard before the hosts settled the tie via Branislav Ivanović in extra time. Terry continued to make a big contribution to Chelsea's push for the trophy – despite being suspended for the final after his red card in the semi-final decider against Barcelona.
