Player: Kingsley Coman (Bayern München)
Having led 2-0 in their round of 16 first leg at Juventus, Bayern trailed by the same scoreline an hour into the return, leaving them 4-2 down on aggregate. Josep Guardiola, facing a first failure to make the UEFA Champions League semi-finals as a coach in what's his last campaign with Bayern, decided to sacrifice Xabi Alonso and deploy 19-year-old winger Kingsley Coman, who just happens to be on loan from Juve.

The match was transformed. Coman won the ball that resulted in Bayern pulling a goal back – feeding Douglas Costa, who crucially had been freed up to play a central role while the teenaged French international took the Brazilian's slot on the right. Next, Coman's 91st-minute cross was headed in by Thomas Müller. And finally, to cap a tireless display, he dribbled half the length of the pitch to score in extra time and clinch a 4-2 triumph (6-4 on aggregate). No surprise he was awarded a maximum rating by the Münchner Merkur – and everybody else. "I certainly can't be disappointed [for Juve], I am part of Bayern now," Coman crowed.

Team: Benfica
Having already impressed in the group stage, Benfica are back in the quarter-finals after home and away victories against Zenit. Not that it was easy in Russia, where their 1-0 first-leg advantage was wiped out by Hulk with 21 minutes to go. However, Benfica had gone to St Petersburg on the back of winning 15 of their previous 16 matches, and five minutes from time Nicolás Gaitán headed in the rebound after a fantastic effort from Raúl Jiménez to effectively seal the tie. Talisca then made it 2-1 to the Portuguese title holders with the last kick.

Not bad considering Benfica were missing a raft of regulars, with goalkeeper Ederson making his competition debut and an untried centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelöf and Andreas Samaris, the latter superb in his first-ever game in that position. "Sometimes in training I play as a central defender, but training has nothing to do with the game; even less so when the game is in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds," midfielder Samaris admitted.

Good week: Paris Saint-Germain
Runners-up behind Real Madrid in Group A, Paris were unseeded in the round of 16 draw, yet their quest for a first UEFA Champions League title goes on after beating Chelsea 2-1 home and away. In fact, four days later their 9-0 thrashing of Troyes ensured Paris clinched a fourth straight Ligue 1 championship with a record eight matches to spare. "Bravo to everyone, but our season isn't finished yet," said coach Laurent Blanc, with eyes on the UEFA Champions League last eight, the Coupe de France semi-final at Lorient on 19 April and, he hopes, two more trophies in May.

The current tally of competitive goals Neymar, Luis Suárez, Lionel Messi have registered between them, after all three scored in Barcelona's 3-1 second-leg success over Arsenal. The triumvirate are only 16 short of their 2014/15 total, which is good going considering Messi's long injury absence which has left him trailing Cristiano Ronaldo 90-83 in the all-time UEFA Champions League count.

Double chance
The UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals start on Wednesday and three clubs are still on course this season to be the first to win both European titles: Barcelona, Paris and Wolfsburg, who may be the outsiders of the trio in the men's competition but are the only ones to have claimed the female prize – in 2013 and 2014. Paris were women's runners-up last term and the French outfit could yet have a treble as they also take on Real Madrid in the UEFA Youth League semi-finals next month.
