There was joy, misery and eye-catching games aplenty this weekend as the UEFA Champions League group stage teams continued to get into the early-season groove.

Bayern had the most to celebrate as they clinched the German Super Cup with a 2-0 victory against fellow group stage hopefuls Dortmund, with Manuel Neuer keeping the hosts at bay in the first half before Arturo Vidal and Thomas Müller earned coach Carlo Ancelotti a first trophy at the club after the break.

There was Super Cup action in Spain too, where Barcelona prevailed 2-0 in the first leg away to Sevilla thanks to goals from Luis Suárez and Munir El Haddadi. In Turkey, meanwhile, group stage representatives Beşiktaş suffered defeat in the nation's own traditional curtain-raiser, going down 3-0 on penalties to Istanbul rivals Galatasaray at the end of a 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere, league action dominated the agenda, with Arsenal losing 4-3 at home to Liverpool in the first round of Premier League games, which also featured a 2-1 loss for champions Leicester at Hull and Tottenham's 1-1 draw at Everton. As for French title holders Paris, they triumphed 1-0 at Bastia before Alexandre Lacazette fired a hat-trick in Lyon's 3-0 victory at Nancy.
