Nominee interview: Griezmann 'on the right track'

Atlético Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann casts his mind back to a "wonderful" UEFA EURO 2016 and says he deserves to be one of the Best Player in Europe nominees.

Griezmann: I had a great season

How does it feel to be nominated among the best three players in Europe?

It means I'm on the right track to be among the best. I have to keep going that way, keep working hard and giving joy to people when I play. Without being big-headed, I think I deserve the nomination because I had a great season with my club and the national team.

What were your highlights of last season?

All of the games we won, but especially the Champions League quarter-final and semi-final [against Barcelona and Bayern München respectively]. And then the whole of the EURO, because it took place in France – it was wonderful, and unfortunately for us we will never experience that again. We were really blown away, and I hope it was the same for the fans as well.

Was 2015/16 your best campaign yet?

Golden Boot: watch all of Griezmann's EURO 2016 goals

Yes, I think so, but I hope there's more to come – a lot of goals, assists and why not trophies as well?

What would winning the Best Player in Europe Award mean to you?

It would mean I'm getting closer to achieving my objective of being among the best players, and to do that I need to keep on working hard and enjoying things on and off the pitch.

Griezmann is vying with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2015/16 UEFA Best Player in Europe Award. The winner will be announced during Thursday's group stage draw in Monaco.
