Carvalho honoured ahead of reunion

Chelsea FC's Ricardo Carvalho collected his 2004 UEFA European Football Award for Best Defender on Wednesday.

England coach present
Carvalho, who left European champions Porto to join Chelsea this summer, will be presented with the award by England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson and UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh at Stamford Bridge.

'A real honour'
The Portuguese international, who was unable to attend the European Football Awards ceremony in Monaco last month, said of the accolade: "It's a real honour to be acknowledged in this way, especially in relation to a competition as prestigious as the Champions League. Last season's achievement with Porto was really memorable for me and it's a pleasure to receive this award before an important game like this, in front of the Porto fans and at my new home, Stamford Bridge."

Winning criteria
The European Football Awards recognise the élite performances matching ability, skill and sportsmanship during the previous Champions League season - with prizes for Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, Best Forward and Most Valuable Player.
